Just Curious to see how he is progressing??
As a bombers fan based in Queensland i have some invested interetst in Queensland youngster at AFL clubs.. Can anyone shine some light on this situation.

Well, I'm mates with Aussie, as I played footy with him for 6 years. I asked one of your fellow supporters on here...Smokin Joe, if I remember correctly. SJ said that Austin was still finding it hard to adapt to the pace of the VFL, as it is a big step-up from the QAFL o the VFL, let alone the AFL.

With my first hand view of watching him grow. He has lightning pace of the mark, and has a great time over the 100 metres. He played Full-forward for the majority of the time I played with him (He only played Full-Back for QLD State), with brief runs in the mid-field. He was one of the better kicks of the ball in our team too. Great body size, and can take strong marks too.

He was a bomber supporter growing up, so I'm happy he got to make it to the club he loves most.

Just finished watching a replay of the Bendigo game on ABC2. Good win in the end. Manufactured mostly by some young players on the Essendon list. Lucy being one of those players. He provided a bit of dash off half back. That combined with nice delivery and a bright red pair of boots, meant that he stood out for me. He is one of a group of young players on the list who i think should get a run sometime this season. I would include in that group Dempsey, Nash, Lee, Jolley, Hocking.

Maybe give some of the senior players who aren't putting out their best performances a run with Bendigo to give them a chance to get into some form. Their presence at Bendigo would also be a positive for the younger players who are not yet getting a go in the seniors.

His game on the weekend was the best I'd seen him play, maybe starting to find his feet a little.

Rawlings gave him a spanking early in the 1st qtr though....

Agreed, Rawlings was too strong, and too experienced for him. But Lucy didn't shirk the issue on any contest. Just needs about 10 extra kg's and 2 years experience and he will kill Rawlings.

Played well in the second half when they moved him out to CHB (on Plapp??). Whoever he was on didn't bother to chase him when Lucy played off him and ran along the wing. Probably picked up about 15 disposals and 5 marks for the game.

I didn't write this but it's pretty good if you wanted an impartial view of Austin Lucy.
For example if anyone out there remembers a kid by the name of Austin Lucy. He was 193cms and 90 plus kgs at draft camp. Played well at the U18 Championships and has played full back for the most part. He has an awkward kicking action. He has great top speed but his speed over 5m and acceleration is poor. He is also not agile at all and is a big bodied slow turning kid.

You know the type. You run them out and let the ball go over there head and turn and get after it with Lucy having to turn quickly and lug his big body after you. So he has to stop, change direction and accelerate. 3 things he struggles with. Wayde Mills os also another similar type. Good speed from 5 to 20m but not much agility and cant kick very well.

So you are limited in what you can do with them a little. Mills has superb endurance though to compensate and is a great kid with his attitude and might make it. But watching Riewoldt turn him inside out this year shows he will struggle at full back and needs to move up the ground and not engage in sprints and agility/recovery tests and be in motion at CHB.

I watched Lucy the other day and he was terrible and (while I hate doing this) you can almost put a line through him already. He simply is going to really struggle to be up to speed as a key defender and does not have the skill at this stage to play elsewhere.

where was this posted?

I think his best bet is a Centre Half back or even running half back flanker myself. but writing someone off in there first year is harsh and pretty stupid.

A non-Carlton site. :)

Is it harsh if it's accurate?

This poster is very impartial.

If you look at the number of games played by footballers drafted at pick 20 play, what should you expect from pick 66 in a draft where Murphy was the only standout?

An AA player shouldn't drop to pick 66 if he's that good and Lucy sounds like another Livingston except he wasn't a top four pick. :(

I played with Austin Lucy for six years, and what that poster has posted is an abo solute crock of crap. I've seen Lucy grow in confidence in those 6 years. His skills have improved 10 fold every year.

Slow acceleration? Please! He has a great acceleration pace.

Not agile? Alright, I've had enough of this guy talking trash. This guy needs to focus on Lucy for an entire game, and for more than one game before he goes and makes himself look like a jackass :thumbsd:

Sounds like?

You're writing a bloke off who you've never seen because of something you've read from someone whose name you haven't even quoted.

Interesting.

He improved on last week today. Looks to be gaining in confidence every week. Likes to have a bit of a run when he gets it which is a good sign.

he sounds like a bloke we could use at full forward,
-good accelleration
-good hands
-tall
needs to bulk up we will make a fraser gheric outta him

Yeah, when I played with him. He was a fullforward/midfielder because of his pace and size. He only played in defence when playing representative football.
