Reports are that the Dons might delist him (www.realfooty.com.au) - would be more than handy addition to the team in my opinion.

19 years old
from Caloundra originally, used to play for Suncoast Lions but taken by the Dons
193cm, 90 odd Kg
plays key defence
shows promise

We need to secure our defence with this draft - otherwise we will be pounded by the likes of the Saints, Geelong, WCE, Swans again in 07 with their talls - big Roger played well in the last few games to suggest something, but we need to find more and Patfull isn't going to be our answer IMO. This is an option that must be investigated........:thumbsu:

Hes a family friend of ppl i know and have seen him play in the vfl a bit, looks a bit of time needed b4 he can solve our defensive problems, but would definitely like him growing up for us and not essendon.

Just so ppl know he is originally a melbourne boy that moved to qld for a few years, so whether he is a true qld who would want to go home is not a certainty

Yep. I would take him in the PSD if he was there. Although don't all new recruits have to spend 2 years on the list?

No, the minimum 2 years is a bit of a myth. However they need to be paid out for their 2nd year. That payout would be included under the salary cap.

I think it was Mark Robinson from the Hun who originally named him. Other journos are just following the flock now. I'd be very surprised if he gets the chop.

Would we want him though? We had every oppurtunity to pick him in the draft last year but declined. I'd have a look at him on the rookie list if he was available.

I didn't think the Dons could delist him unless they paid out his two year contract.

Even if they did, I would be worried about recruiting a player that can't impress Essendon, ie. I would have thought the Dons are in need of key backmen and would be giving candidates every opportunity to prove themselves.

TBO, even though he was recruited as a Key Backman, he has struggled significantly in the VFL when required to play there.

His Future could be on a HBF as a third tall or on a wing similar to Andrew Embley, however he would need to build his skills up cosiderably to be able to full-fill that role.

Project Player, Personally, i don't wanna loose him.

Rookie list only. If he is de-listed this year (wait and see on that), it is hard to justify a place on the list for a guy who was one of the last players drafted in '05 and whose club is prepared to pay his contract out rather than have him waste space on the list.

He may also be released for personal rather than footballing reasons.....it seems a strange thing for a first year KPP to be delisted.

This time last year Colin Wiseby chose to profile Wayde Mills and Austin Lucy in the same profile -- almost as if they were one person. Can't find it now, but he said something along the lines of 'their single-mindedness, athleticism and discipline would see both of them go on to get every once out of their abilities'.

I got the impression that Mills was more physically mature but that Lucy was more complete as a tall backman, -- better skills and a touch pacier.

Not sure if he settled well, but I'd have him back in a heartbeat.

Just some perspective from a Bomber fan...

I have seen him play a few games this year and well he has a fair way to go to make it at AFL level. He is definitly not ready to play seniors in the next year. Whether he will make it as an AFL player remains to be seen.

He was recruited as a Full Back but very rarely played there for Bendigo. He played more as the 3rd backman type of role.

I am not sure why Essendon are contemplating delisting him as I would give all young players two years to prove themselves. Attitude wise he had been spot, always trains hard etc. Either the coaches feel that he won't make it or he does indeed want to head back to Qld...

Big kids are always going to take a while to fill out. To put a kid under the torch after less than 12 months seems pretty harsh.

It's also worth noting that a single big summer can do huge things to skinny kids. Cam Wood was named 'Balsa' when he got to the club for 2005 as an 18yo, and with good reason. He's not a monster in 2006, but he certainly had the bulk to to play a major role in the ruck for us after Charman went down.

I wouldn't be surprised if Lucy came on fast, wherever he's playing.

I played with Austin at Caloundra from 1998 to 2004. He has lived in QLD for more than 'a few years'. His family still live in Caloundra. He's a great prospect though (no bias). Speed, agility and foot skills. I'd love for Carlton to take him.

Woody is still fairly lanky.

What about Benny Cousins? He underwent a transformation in between seasons, that was a couple of years ago.

Yes, but the point remains that his body developed from sub-AFL level to AFL level (albeit, still lanky) in 1 summer. They tried him earlier in 2005 (Round 5?) and weren't prepared to risk him that year again even when our ruck stocks got desperately perilous (i.e. No Charman, Keating or McDonald).

They had no qualms playing him in a less demanding situation 12 months later (we still had Crackers through to the end of 2006).

Maybe a couple of years off from a Jeff White type body?

He's a good size and a half bigger the Whitey (195cm) but if he has his leap and mobility I'd be happy. He's closer to younger, slimmer Dean Cox in terms of size and shape -- same height, 5+ years younger and 10k lighter.

Cox was regarded as a gold-plated Gumby at 19yo -- apparently blokes were wetting their pants laughing at him when he arrived at the club from up Woop Woop -- so Balsa is probably technically ahead of him at the same stage. Obviously he has a massive task to improve to Cox's current level, but he has the target to aim at.

To think most people this time last year were predicting we would take him with our first pick:rolleyes:

So what's his problem? He's quick, he's got good endurance. What is so bad about him that Essendon are not even willing to see out his two year contract?

Yeah that is what I am very curious of. No chance he just wants to come home:p

We need to pick this kid up to give us some backline depth - AA U18 fullback, has the size, might flourish being back home.

He might have had a bad year at the Dons - the seniors won bugger all this year, and he spent his time in the VFL - not such a bad thing, its better standard by far then the AFLQ league and will have toughened him up.

It has to be a priority to improve our defence this year - we leaked goals last season. If we don't pick up any KPP backmen this year, we will continue to struggle against the Geelong, Saints, WCE, Sydney forward talls.

We must have Austin Lucy to the Lions pick 4 PSD! No hacks/retreads Matthews, pretty please

This is an example of how some people are overrating the junior players from QLD. They play div 2 in the championships and play in a substandard league during the season. I am not saying there won't be exceptions to the rule. Same this year, how do people rate Proud, Armitage and Pettard above guys like Houli who have played great football at TAC level consistently and also played well in DIV 1 in the championships.

WTF?? So you don't rate these former Qld juniors : Dunstall, Voss, Akermanis, Saint Nick, Big Mal for starts

Agree that the local footie is of a lesser standard compared to the VFL, but it isn't 'substandard'. No wonder - there are a lot more people playing AFL in Vic, we have to compete with Rugby League and Union for players.

Maybe if they didn't rate them (Proud etc) they wouldn't have made it into the All Aust team.

Recruiters have and will continue to seek out the best talent in the country, and we won the Div 2 championship at the U18 level, so stop criticising us you Melbourne centric d1ckhead......footie is not only played in Victoria so open your eyes and give some kids outside Vic some credit
