Population is a shitty excuse for an area not to be considered as a state.

Actually it is, if the NT was a state it would receive more members of the senate in parliament and the number would be too large for the number of people it represents when compared to the other states.

They did have a referendum on it in the 90's but it was defeated narrowly with the residents voting to stay a territory, but another vote may happen around 2018.

Not sure if I'm butting in here.. but what would this look like if the chevrons were slightly thinner, and the federation star was green in the gold triangle section on the left?

Then the state flag versions could retain the chevrons and federation star (I think someone said the upper left represents 'control'? Or is that too state vs. federal government power struggle-ish?) but be in state colours with state symbols..

There's some very crappy flags posted in this thread. How about leaving our flag the way it is? Why fix something if it aint broken.
Sure, if you ignore the fact that the big symbol in the left corner of our flag is representative of an imperialist takeover of a land which involved attempted genocide of the indigenous inhabitants and all that stuff, then fine, there's nothing wrong with it. Even to put it lightly, our connections with the British monarchy are pretty much irrelevant in the year 2016, as is the monarchy itself (God bless).

Well, I like it. It would look pretty decent as a cape when we win something at the Olympics too. I like the chevrons as a visual element but I'm not sure if there's enough heritage or history behind it... But then I'm not sure I want to start acknowledging particular sections of the population because if we do then we need to represent everybody, and its meant to unify us as the modern nation we are, not divide us as the various segmented populations we were or might have been.

I think, in that way, I really like what NZ is trying to do, and what Canada has done, to name a couple... using native flora and fauna on the flag makes sense because its not political, and it is unifying - it is something that this land had before any of us and without any of us. The colours of the wattle make sense, but I also like the idea of including a uniquely Australian animal. A kangaroo is most recognisable, but I also really like a koala or a platypus, the latter particularly because no one believed it was legitimately a creature and not some sort of prank when taxidermed specimens first made their way back to the UK.
Could get creative with incorporating an animal too, for example like this:

It's become such a bogan symbol of late, though.

I couldn't respect it becoming our nations flag.

We swear by the southern cross, to stand truly by each other and fight to defend our rights, and our liberties.

These words need to be in ones mind when viewing the flag, the 22 diggers who died fighting for justice.

People fought and died for an Australian flag, swearing an allegiance to Australian values in direct opposition to the crown. These people from around the world protested against high taxes...how liberal is that? The eureka story once it is properly examined is a story for all Australians left and right. Then again I'm from Ballarat where no matter what your persuasion is the flag is seen with great pride as the banner for Australian democracy. I personally am in a job where Eureka is central to everything I do, so I may be biased, but come on that flag is visually a thing of beauty.

I don't disagree that it's got a lot of good history behind it, but it has been taken over by some more negative (at least in my perspective) movements, such as communists, white nationalists and reclaim Australia.

I reckon it looks alright, but we could have far more visually appealing flags representing us.

The current flag's depiction of the Southern Cross is a wholly unique one and is the epitome of Australiana to me. No matter where you are in Aus, if you look up at night, you see it in the stars and see it on the flag. The SC is locked in for mine.

And this is already a common complaint about Tasmania in the Senate. Although if you still consider the Senate to be the states' house, that is kind of its entire purpose...

our connections with the British monarchy are pretty much irrelevant in the year 2016
The Queen is our head of state, that's a fairly relevant connection. If the republic ever gets up you'll be right, but until then the connection couldn't be much stronger unless she came round for tea each Tuesday.

Even when we do someday become a republic our laws, government, education and medical systems, welfare state and language come from our relationship with the UK. There is a far better argument for keeping the UJ as a historical symbol than any tenuous links to beaches or soil, which most countries have.

But that's not hip, change is the fashion in this day and age.

I don't like the the flag, change it
i don't like the anthem, change it.
i don't like the states borders, change it.

:(

Isn't that a good thing?

Nobody likes change, but its inevitable. Some things change for the better, some worse. If progress is a thing of this day and age then I'm very happy.
