Anyone got the stats on how many errors they have made, because they dont seem to be making the right calls on the close ones. the challenge has highlighted how bad they are.

According to the AO website the men have made 274 challenges, of which
87 or 31.75% have been successful.

The women have made 164 challenges of which 44 or 26.83% have been successful.

So there have been 131 confirmed errors on the 2 main courts. Goodness knows how many more errors occurred that weren't challenged, or took place on the other courts without hawkeye.

It's pretty hard to call Andy Roddick's serve going at 220kmph.... the ones that linesman missed by 3mm are pretty hard to call wouldn't you think?

Being a linesman is not the easiest job, trust me. When a ball misses or hits the line by a few millimetres or less, do you actually no how little distance that is? And the reason they yell out so much louder when the call being made is extremely close, is that they are trying to "sell" their decision.

federer challenged a number of call tonight, including consecative calls which were in. the linesmen must be blind or something. they were terrible and must have been embarrassed.

They're under a heap of pressure each point, but more often than not they make the right decision. They have recieved a heap of criticism from players over the years, but now if they don't like the call, they can challenge. It's that easy, the players are in control. The so called 'biased' side of the game is disappearing, technology is taking over gradually.

I have always wanted to know who are the linesman and women? Are they professional, do they travel the globe? Or are they local club tennis players who 'work' at the open every year?

Very high percentage are local. When I was doing it, one woman came over from England to do it but it was mainly for a holiday. In my first year I umpired all the qualifying days, 4 days of the main draw, the junior and the wheelchair open after doing only a few days of 'training', doing some line umpiring on 14 year old kids who just laughed at you.

There are different levels to obtain which if gained will ultimately see you moving up the ranks and umpiring on different lines.

I just did it for some fun, but realised it wasn't all that much fun when being yelled at, and having to converse with fat, middle aged women who's only interest is tennis!!

Why have linesman at all on centre court?

Surely the Hawk-eye technology is now at the point where it can detect if a ball is out in real time and make some sort of beep noise.
