With the Australian Open Tennis about to start here in Melbourne, I thought I'd ask my fellow Geelong supporters who you will be supporting in this event.

For me, it has to be....

Mens: Lleyton Hewitt
Womens: Kim Cljisters

That is the reason I believe the ladies should play best of 5 sets.... the longer they are out on the court, the better!! :p

Men's: Andre Agassi. Always have been a fan of his, especially since one of my old college roommates, back in California more than ten years ago, had been his roommate at the Bollitieri Tennis Academy in Florida some time before that.

Women's: Anna Kournikova. Look, I know she's not going to win it, and this pick isn't down to the "drool" factor, either. But with all the crap she's had to cop in the past, it would be nice to see her advance as far as she can. And as I said on the Australian Open thread on the General board, there really isn't that deep of a talent pool in the women's game nowadays, and a lot of us are getting bored with the Williams sisters winning everything all of the time.

Cheers,
William

I know I'm going to butcher the spelling of the woman's last name-- but is it Hautchtinova? That's the only other talented Russian female tennis player that I can think of...

Cheers,
William

The women's game is an absolute joke. There are about 15-20 decent players who can give the top girls a good run for their money on their day and the rest are basically walkovers. Compare that to the men's game where there's around 50-60 players who can push the top players on their day and you see the difference in depth between the men and women's game.

15-20???? Try more like 5-8. No one outside the top 10 can challange either Williams sister.

There is also another young blonde russian playing today on court 7 who is tipped to be the next Kournikova. She is only 15 and very attractive.Maria Shiropova is her name

Great to see Lleyton Hewitt get through his first round match yesterday against Magnus Larsson, even though the Sweede took it to 5 sets.

It certainly isn't her. Apparently her ex-boyfriend spilled the beans on her after match goings on in the changerooms with him.

No. Babsi Schett is her name. Ranked about 20, and expected to be in the top ten this year. Her picture was in Loaded, in the blondes liftout.

Talk about a cakewalk... Lleyton Hewitt made short work of Todd Larkham last night in just 74 minutes, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1. A friend of mine came up with a good comment about the match. He said Lleyton would have had more competition playing against a tennis ball machine!! Harsh but probably true!! :D

It's probably good though for him, as his first round was a 5 setter, this 3 set 'walk in the park' will be good to give him a rest. A few more of these before the tougher later matches will do him a great deal of good for the finals! :D

There is indeed a difference in depth, but 15-20 top women is a declaration which is a bit generous, IMHO. I'd say if there are a number in double figures, I'd be quite surprised.

For example... you think you've seen enough of the reign of the Williams sisters, and that of Serena in particular? Something tells me we haven't seen anywhere near the end of it yet...

And about Lleyton Hewitt... classic men-against-boys stuff a couple of nights ago. Based on that performance, the tournament can be his for the taking.

Cheers,
William

Or perhaps, against a garage door!

At least the garage door would return every serve...

Yeah, no one out of the top 10 will be able to get past the Williams sisters, even at their best.

I think it will probably be an all Williams final again. Hopefully someone can come from nowhere and pull off something big though.

Are Venus and Serena Williams on the same half of the draw or are they on opposite sides so they can meet in the final if they both keep winning??

I still think Kin Cljisters is a chance if she plays well. :)

They're in opposite sides of the draw. Serena is #1 and Venus is #2, therefore if the two continue the way they are now, they will meet each other in the final. :)

Hewitt's match is VERY close at the moment against El Aynaoui.

7/6, 6/7 and we've just started the 3rd set.

Match has almost been going 2 hours!!

C'Mon Lleyton!! :D

He's gonna have to pull off something big in this last game.

El Aynaoui serving for the match!
