I think we're in serious trouble down back going forward for the next couple of years. Enwright to me looks to have lost pace and endeavour for the ball, never thought I'd say that, but lately there's been a few signs.
Tom Lonergan needs a heavy big body to help him out, Scarlo and Hunt past ther best but maybe required as there's no ready replacements at that level, what else can we do?

As we well know we also need some bigger bodied troops in the centre with Selwood, 85-90kg, big bodied mids.
Let's hope Wells recruits along these lines, reckon the last thing we need is the 180, 75-80kg player.

We need a guerra type
Enright was injured, but need to add some pace and stability

Murdoch wasin awe, and should not have played

Not sure why wojo and byrnes were left out

The coach needed to fill the space in front of Pav last night (and this thread would be dead)leading out 5mts in front taking chest marks for 4 quarters wtf.

We had a spare man out back
Not sure wha they were dong

The ball was coming in very quick when Pav was on those leads. Its very hard to fill the gap under those circumstances. Maybe a smaller defender in front, forcing the lead to one side only, would have helped (Scarlet in any year pre 2011 would have been the man for that job. Not in 2012).

Anway Lonners is for the Gorillas - not a leopard.

Is it a silly idea to chase Jordan Russell?
With Scarlo gone (what a £¥€%ing champion)
There is a massive hole
Gillies lets be honest is NOT up to it. I think we'd have to beg Hawthorn to take him.
Maybe ship him off to GWS with the compo and we'll grab one of the 17 year olds.
Keep working with Brown as a back (do love a backman who can catch) if he can stay in the Twos and take the key forward every week we would know where hes at by mid/late season.
Russell would plug the hole straight up

Don't write off Gillies just yet. We have him, he's performed this year when asked, and it wasn't as if Taylor and Lonergan starred yesterday. They were ordinary, and they are allowed to be human. This team has had to dig really deep over July-August just to get there, and that is a sign of where we are at. We have succeeded since 2002 by developing what we have and making them into accountable immortals. Enright was not an automatic star, either was Lonergan, we have been spoiled by success, and too many fans seem to arrogantly think we deserve to be on top every year, and that we can patch up weaknesses at will.
We may yet make the 8 again next year with Smedts, Guthrie, Brown, Varcoe, Menzel, Simpson, Vardy having decent preseasons, and Gillies should get his opportunity next year in some defensive role.
We had 9 of our 07 GF team play yesterday, and Bartel, Kelly, Scarlett, Chappy, Enright, Corey, all played well below their best, only Mackie, Hunt and Selwood were up to their standard. Easy to look at the back 6, we need to think longer term, replacing Bartel, Kelly, Corey, Chapman, Ablett, Rooke and Ling. That's where it all stems from. We rely on Selwood excessively. I'm hoping we have that replacement policy in evolution as we write. We probably do.

Agree in part...I was staggered WOJO was left out. But there was so much else wrong with last nights effort, theres no point in trying to dissect it. Its been a great ride, Ill just be grateful for what I have had

Guys asking for wojo, have you been watching the twos? He's gone, can't compete defensively but is still ok as a runner offensively.
I agree with russel, if cheap why not? Brown will work out ok I think.
This issue last night for mine we pav is simply too quick for lonners, I dunno why he was on him at all.

When?

and it wasn't as if Taylor and Lonergan starred yesterday.

Not last night but they have been rocks nearly all year. The way Freo moved the ball into their forward half nearly all night - but especially in the first quarter - Hercules would have been hard pressed to stop the flow.

The team as a whole weren't switched on last night, not just the defenders. Bluey McGrath made some great points last night, as did some posters in the game day thread:

- Our usual kick in tactic when under pressure is long to the boundary line towards Harry Taylor. Did we even use that option last night? Seemed we'd always kick long straight down the middle to a midfielder.

- Our midfielders were flat footed around the contest for most of the first half. At one stage I saw Hill just standing by himself right in front of Sandilands at a boundary throw-in. How does that happen? Someone in the game day thread noted that there were always two Freo players standing by themselves on the defensive side of the contest too.

- Was staggering the amount of times we were outnumbered at a contest in the backline, then allow two Freo players loose on the wing, who in turn kicked to two unchecked players in forward 50. What were our players doing?

That tends to happen when the opposition flood.

i think we have an excellent back 6 on paper, just need to re-organise and have a bit better defensive pressure in the midfield to stop it coming in so fast

lonergan, taylor and enright are all-australian shortlisted

mackie's year was excellent, and i thought the back end of hunt's year was as well. and young players like guthrie, possibly smedts, varcoe might end up back there, and i imagine either walker or brown will be groomed as a key back from here... i think there's plenty to work with.

Tell me what he did poorly when he actually was given game time?
Only got in when Scarlett was suspended or injured, and did enough . If you can't recall, it's too far back. I looked out for his performances, was not disappointed.
He's been in the best in the 2's most weeks.
Anything else I can add?

That's all fine but things have got to be looked at.
When did Simpkin get subbed on?

I'd love to know, because he collected 9 possessions, he did that from the sub job when elevated a couple of games ago.

Do you reckon the club's serious about him?

Some talk on radio today (774 ABC-Scott Gullan/Gerard Whately) suggesting that if Corey plays on, he could move to the back line- big bodied, tough in the contest etc...They think his time in the midfield may be over due to his lack of speed.

What are people's thoughts on this suggestion?

Simpkin was subbed in for Murdoch during the mid/second part of third quarter I think. I remember call for Corey to be dropped before half time as he was nowhere in first half and if we were going to lose I'd rather Simpkin got some decent game time in a final.

Josh Hunt and lonners are bad enough under pressure without joel corey there.

I'd rather see Joel Corey as a defensive forward, the Max Rooke role.

Our back line is too old and too slow.

Brown, Guthrie and Murdoch should all be in there next year.

The thing is it's not like we haven't seen the flood before, be it the Clarko Cluster, The Lyon Cage or Malthouse's Legion of Doom we have encountered many different forms of the flood over the years but last night you would have thought it was a revolutionary tactic our guy's were unsure what to do and set up in all the wrong positions, we were half a kick out of position all night

I actually thought you might tell me how "...he's performed this year when asked..." as it's you who made the call.

I'm more than keen for him to be a regular ones player as we will need someone of his dimensions in the coming years. Just don't see it myself and would appreciate a supporter of his explaining what it is they see in him as a future regular ones player. Based on ones performances so far. I don't buy the lack of opportunity line. Our club has a history of persevering with players in the ones if they think there will be a payday.
