I was living here in SYNNEY when we were formed and there was no internets so we never got much info but i remember some names being thrown around as to what we would be called.

2 that spring to mind were ADELAIDE ASSASINS and ADELAIDE LAKERS.
Can you remember any others and how close we were to not being called the CROWS ??

I remember the "Sharks" was the preferred name by most in SA but (from memory)it wasn't the SA public that had the last say.The AFL decided to call us the Crows because of marketability.

I have a couple of early Ashley Porter Crows books and the name Sharks and Lakers came up with Blue and Green as the Colours. He also called "rounds" - "series"- (eg. in the fifteenth series, not "in round fifteen") so I'm not sure how good a journalist he was.

i seem to remember the adelaide "arrows" was getting bandied around

as above there was an Adelaide Sharks push, and the Port lightning bolt guernsey (the first one) that was similar to one of the mock ups.

not exact, but there was a St Kilda feel to it. There were a number of possibilities and guesses, it was mostly Porter doing the speculating.

I remember reading, I think in the ten year anniversary book, that a bunch of mockups were done and the Sharks was one of them.

When they were all laid out the handfull of employees the club had at the time preferred the Crows mascot and design.

Thank Christ. It is a design that has stood the test of time and never looked dated. A real Footy jumper Unlike the other clubs who entered after us (following 90s fashion trends), both having to change the home jumper since.

I think you'll find the Sharks was ruled out because East Fremantle FC had first dibs on it and at that stage wanted to enter the VFL/AFL at some point.

What was the book that came out after 100 games? Something to Crow about? Can't recall. Pretty handy read if you're interested in this kind of thing.

IIRC – the Lakers was the popular nickname by the fans and that was based on the stadium location. But I couldn’t imagine how the ‘West Lakes Lakers’ would have gone now. I’m glad they decided to go with the Crows.
