Like to know your thoughts if on who would play on who if our back six was matched against our front six?
For the purposes of the exercise (feel free to nominate your own), I reckon our best back six would read:
B. Grimes Rance Short
HB Houli Astbury Vlastuin

Front six:
HF. Caddy Moore Edwards
F. Butler Riewoldt Rioli (when fit)/Castagna

Who’d play on whom? Rance or Astbury on Riewoldt? Who would Grimes go to? Edwards or Caddy? Which would Vlastuin take? Short on Rioli? Or Houli on Rioli?
For me ……

Short Rance Grimes
Butler Riewoldt Edwards

Houli Astbury Vlastuin
Rioli/Castagna Moore Caddy.
Go your hardest.

Difficult coz Richmond are greater than the sum of their parts and the gameplan relies on everyone performing their role more so than individual matchups. Defence relies on the forwards and mids putting pressure on so its a dirty entry and forwards rely on fast break transition out of defence.

Maybe answer it a different way by saying that if Richmond played Richmond I think it would be a low scoring game as defence is the one wood - and the free kick count would be nil all.

Astbury-Jack
Rance-Caddy/Martin
Grimes-Moore
Short-Butler
Houli-Rioli/Higgo
Vlas-Caddy/Martin
Bellis-Castagna

The backline would win out overall imo, though we might have to go smaller than usual to suit our forwardline.
Rance to get reported for striking one of our smalls after getting sick of chasing them around for 3 1/2 quarters.

A brilliant backline will always beat a brilliant forward line.
Memories go back to when the Silvagni led BL held Lockett, Dunstall and Ablett Sr goalless. ( I think it was those three). Look at Adelaide last year before they met us in the finals as they were kicking bags yet managed 60 points in the GF. Good backmen are Scrooges and will do anything within the rules to counteract a forwards positives.

I think our talls would struggle against Rance, Astbury and Grimes. (JR, Moore, Caddy).
I think our small forwards would go nuts. Shorty, Vlas, Broad/Houli would get chopped up.

Understand though the quality of entries is a massive determinant. Eg vs WCE, Crows...they all look ordinary if it’s coming in clean. Dirty entries favours our backs.
