Is it as bad a we think...

Maybe they are only starting to gel...

With four of our best 7 backman out on the weekend, we conceded only 56 points...

I refer Of course to Newman, Moore, mcguane, and astbury.

Obviously we need a gun KPD. but maybe they aren't as bad as we thought...

Albeit on the back of one really good defensive game.

Let's not get too carried away. I wouldn't exactly say the swans have a potent forward line. Throw a bradshaw back in the mix and it changes things very quickly.

I don't think McGuane is part of our best back 6 at all. Astbury isn't part of it yet, and who knows if Moore will ever return.

But the backline does seem promising.

Grimes Rance Newman
Houli Post Batchelor

Dea, Thursfield, Astbury all pushing for spots

Obviously lost on you that Astbury was injured playing at Coburg, where he was banished after some ordinary performances early in the year and never returned.
Long call to say he is on our best half dozen.
Question marks on Moore too who is no certainty to recover!

We also tried Connors as a defender but I suppose if Houli, Newman, Dea and Batchelor can give us drive off half back , Connors and Deledio can play wing, half fwd or out of the goal square!

Not quite Goldy. He was called up to play against the Swans, and injured his knee in the first qtr of that game.

But point taken, his form this year doesn't point to him being an automatic inclusion in our best back six. (But I still hold hopes)

I really hope Rance, Thursty & Post get to play together for the rest of the year to be honest. I think they provide a good combination, with plenty of flexibility. Going in to next year, I think Thursty and Grimes are pretty interchangeable, same goes for Post and Astbury.

McGuane is not part of the "best 6". Thursfield, Moore, Grimes and Rance are the talls. Astbury needs time.

Bachelor, Newman, Houli and Connors are the mid sized backs.

Deledio to spend time in the midfield and I'd really like to see Newman tried on a Wing or HFF.

Remember also that Astbury was recruited as a forward. If competition is that strong for a spot in our defence, he may get his chance forward.

Competition for spots can only be a good thing, but at the same time, we need a settled defensive unit that are familiar with each other, so I too hope the give the Rance/Post/Thursfield combo the rest of the season to see how it works.

The thought of finally being in a position to release Deledio, and possibly even Newman & Conca etc, into the middle is a mouthwatering one.

You lost me at McGuane. And It's probably the first time the combination of Rance, Thursty, Dea, Houli and Post have played together so I wouldn't say they're gelling yjust et, give it a year or 2 and we'll see.

all points taken on board.

i think i should rephrase.

with so many of our regular backmen, and touted future backmen missing, and still fielding some good defenders, future KPD's, competition for spots looks on the rise... and the situation isnt as dire as one wouldve first thought...

we have conceded alot of high scores this year, but rance and batch, along with houli newman, moore (his importance to us is underrated, and is being nursed back to have a fruitful 2012) and maybe either posty/astbury, leaves us only one or two short of a (hopefully) strong, talented quick athletic backline...

grimes is a huge miss by me, 1000 apologies. and on mcguane, he was very important when missing guys like moore, and whilst not in our future best 22, has been in our best 22 90% of the time this year....

my point i guess is, we need to develop these guys, because i think there are some rfeal jems in there, as well as the experienced heads who are on the sidelines. still the weakest part of our list, but catching up i think, and trading in a trengrove (or someone very similar) would only cause to help develop, and competition for valued spots for our great club.

Instead of focussing on getting a KPD I say develop the youth that we have, for instance look at the improvement Rance has shown with some responsibility. We need the same from Astbury and Grimes next season.

To me our immediate need is a pacy, highly skilled attacking defender in the Chris Yarran or Leon Davis mould. I don't see Deledio playing this role because we want him in the midfield and he often has to play tall down back.

reckon ive made lots of points about the bacline and structure so im not going to go over what ive said in the past.

all i will say is i really believe astbury to be a hit up forward type rather than a backman.
i also believe we are yet to find that big key lynch pin.

oh by the way unless kel moore can refind a yard of pace id say hes gone.

Regardless of all else said in the thread: f*** off McGuane at the end of the year. List clogger of the highest order, we have too many young backmen to rotate through and have a go to play him.
