This rule frustrates me but........

I actually think it will be beneficial to our backline this year.
I know Clement will be affected and Maxwell/Shaw had begun using the same style last year, but looking at our other defenders it could actually be a bonus (as annoying as the rule is).

Maxwell, Presti, Wakelin and Lonie are all fantastic spoilers of the ball in a marking contest.

In fact, how often does Presti or Wakelin even attempt holding a player off to mark the ball?

I think it may even advantageous for a guy like Wakelin.
He generally likes to stay close to his man and does his best to get in front.
I was a bit frustrated last year at the way he would get in front of defenders only to be pushed off the ball and out marked, or simply pushed out of the contest all together.
With the new interpretation of the rule every time this happens he will receive a free kick.

I would be interested to know if anyone who saw the game on Friday noticed anything like this.

As for the hands in the back, it's a natural reaction; you need some leverage to try and take the mark. I saw Clement use his hands on Friday but he didn't get penalized for it. What good is the rule then.
