Gday guys,
looking at the game yesterday it is pretty obvious that we still need some major improvements in our backline.

Thorton was good. Bowyer didposal was dreadful and Teague also let us down with his kicking. Prenta looked good when back but I think Pagan has known throughout the pre-season that we are one good defender short.

cheers

Bowyer needs more matches, hasn't played in a while. But i can see both Teague and Bowyer causing blues fans heartache with their disposal and fumbling in 2004.

Thornton is a good player, will get better. Need Livingston or Norman to step up, though doubt either are up to it. Prenda is okay, but not KPP.

Norman is a certainty if he can get his attitude right based on what I saw last year with his pace and spoiling ability.

Sporn is about our number 4 defender and is found out against taller players with a bit of strength. Can't rely on Teague to play tall one minute and play quick the next. He is quite slow and if his hands are not sure, it looks quite tragic.

I still like Bowyer though, give him the benefit of the doubt as the defence was under so much pressure.

Round1 team should look like this,

FB- Norman - Thornton - Livingston
HB- Scotland - Prendagast - Lappin

C- Stevens - Camporeale - Johnson

HF- Morell - Whitnall - Harford
FF- Angwin - Fevola - Kenna

RUCK- French - Kouta - Waite

INTER: Walker - Hulme - Houlihan - Mckormik

EMRG: Bowyer - Mott - Teague

Backline: The backline looks abit more respectable with the likes of Norman, Livingston and Thornton and the prospect of Scotland and Waite rotating. Still Cleary shows we need a gun CHB.

Midfield: With Stevens, Kouta, Campo, Waite, Johnson could put up a challenge with nearly any team in the comp. Maybe one more top notch midfielder.

Forward: IMO this is our strength by a country mile, Whitnall, Fevs, Angwin, Morell and the speedstar Kenna this would give most opposition backlines something to worry about

Stevens is out for the first 2 games.
Saw Kenna on the weekend for the first time, not sure he even got near the ball, let alone a touch.

Watching the game yesterday against Geelong made me even more convinced who should play CHB for the Carlton Football Club in 2004.

Here me out and then give me your thoughts. Our backline at the moment is inexperienced, under-sized and lacks leadership with McKay gone. We really needed someone yesterday who could take a big pack mark, split up the play by taking players on (as Macka would) and also someone who could be the target for the kick outs. Don't get me wrong, I think Bowyer and Teaguey will be solid half back flankers, I am a big wrap for Thornton and Scotland does find plenty of the ball back there. But we need big tall strong man, the kind that Norman and Livingston just arent. Also Carlos will not play AFL this year, he is a few years away from CHB I think.

Therefore after weighing up all of the above, and havent witnessed him play there back in the late nineties to revive his career, I think the answer quite simply is Anthony Koutafides.
Do you guys remember when he held down that possie?
The reasons for this are as follows:
- leadership
- strength
- can take a big grab
- he is agile
- we don't really need him in the middle as much as last year and the year before bc Stevens and co. will take care of things in there..

Please please hear me Denis Pagan...

Yep,
I think we need Kouta in the middle taking the pressure off Stevens and whitnall has to do the same with Fevola.

Would dearly love to see Livingston step up, I think if he doesn't it will be his last season with the Blues. However, first crack should go to Prenta.

Get him out of rucking duties, get Barnaby 'I can't kick and mark' French out of the side and bring in Mott. We need to give first use of the ball to midfielders like Camp, Kouta and Stevens for Carlton to be a good side this year.

Finally, i'm seeing people (Thanks ODN, NavyBlueBlood and Jimmae) that are thinking the same as me. I've been saying it all preseason and now watching the game on Saturday, we don't have anyone else who can hold down that position. Whitnall is to slow, Livingston isn't good enough, Norman needs more experience and Prenda is better suited elsewhere - on a wing maybe.

As for round one, I would line the team up like this:

Backs: Teague Thornton Bowyer
H-Backs: Lappin Kouta Norman
Centres: Scotland Campo Waite
H-Forwards: Morell Whitnall Harford
Forwards: Houlihan Fevola Fisher

Rucks: French Johnson Hulme

I/C: Sporn Prendergast Bannister Kenna

This way, I would use Scotland as run with role on Bell and use Hulme to run with Haselby. Match Lappin up on Headland as his defensive skills are pretty much non-existant.

Down back, I would match up Teague on Medhurst and Bowyer on Farmer. Just a question over Bowyers pace, but if can get into Farmers ear and get him off his game, he could come out ok.

Kouta would match up on Longmuir in what would be an inetresting match-up.

Up forward, lets hope Whitnall and Morell can provide 2 good marking targets to feed the rest of our forwards.

Cheers,

I think I may have mentioned my Angwin/Kouta/Prenda/Norman rotation policy earlier?

I honestly think those four can be easily rotated on-field for any given chb situation with excellent results.. so long as Angwin remembers where his fist has to land for a spoil (see yet to be served one week suspension from kangas game for more details).
