backline?

did anyone notice today who was in the backline all at the same time in the second quarter.

mal michael
courtney johns
scott lucas
dustin fletcher
paddy ryder

that was the backline in the second quarter. that would have to be the biggest and sowest defence i have ever seen.

why dont they play runners/attacking defenders of half back. every team seems to have one or two except us. It was mcphee a few years ago but that has not quite worked out.

how about we use dyson of half back or winderlich. players with pace who we can give the ball to and they can run and carry and actually kick the ball well and hit a target.

Mal and Fletch were probably 2 of our best today. We had 2 match up on Boyle, Franklin, Roughead, Gilham at that stage, and whoever was the resting ruckman. So we kind of had no choice but to go tall

It was a shambles to set up like that.

I would like to know what the coaching staff were thinking.

Hawks had Croad as their only tall down there and just kept on running the ball out from around half back.

I really feel sorry for our backline! They are consistently under siege due to our 3rd rate midfield!!!

Yeah I noticed that set up as well however Hathorn did have a tall forward line at that stage and it wasn't long till Rama moved to the backline.

I thought our backline was the least of our worries today.

Michael and Fletch were not too bad...Paddy is about two years behind in development to Frankline and well Johns is not a backman.

The midfield was the number one concern today...

Yeah I noticed that set up as well however Hathorn did have a tall forward line at that stage and it wasn't long till Rama moved to the backline.

I thought our backline was the least of our worries today.

People are quick to tee off on Johns . First day in defence and he has to contend with no pressure in the midfield and the ball continually coming into the forward line with ease. I seem to remember Fletch, Micheal and Ryder being out marked and out lead at stages. There where also a number of players who turned it over coming out of defence.
There where worse than Johns out there . Monfries to start with refusing to follow his man out of the forward line and letting him run through the middle and kick goals from the back pocket. Lloyd giving away free kicks and continually trying to out body his opponents rather than attacking the footy just to name two.

Oracle, Monfries should be banished to the backline for the next 4 games. If he can't make an impression there- off load to SA.

Cant see him getting traded but he has gone backwards this year and currently doesnt look like making it as a midfielder.

Exactly! Our list is not evolving fast enough with the pace of the game.

ant the points you make about Fletch, Ryder and Mal being outmarked are correct, but at least those players give us something else.
They can win a contested possession and can give us some drive off our backline.
The only possession johns can get is a sideways pass from someone that has actually won their own ball.
