'Backstabbed' Hooper quits
By Jon Pierik
April 8, 2003

CARL HOOPER has announced he is pulling out of the Test series against Australia and will never play under new captain Brian Lara.

An angry Hooper, dumped from the captaincy last week, believes he was backstabbed by two of the three national selectors – Joey Carew and Gordon Greenidge, in concert with Lara, in recent weeks.

Selection panel chairman Viv Richards wanted Hooper retained as captain but was out-voted.

Hooper had yet to tell Richards of his decision to abandon the series against Australia when The Daily Telegraph learned of the story early this morning.

"Carl will never, ever play under Brian," a source close to the West Indian veteran said. "He got the captaincy based on an untruthful report on Carl's fitness.

"Brian is a very insecure man."

Hooper believes Carew, former teammate Greenidge and Lara spread lies about his fitness, saying he was "unable to walk and was unfit to play in the team".

"That's just rubbish," the source said. "As soon as Carl went home they started leaking stories he was unfit and that they needed to find a new captain."

Hooper flew to Adelaide with his family after the World Cup last month to rest and have both of his surgically-repaired knees inspected by local doctors.

But he returned to the West Indies in time to play for Guyana in the semi-finals of the domestic competition, where he scored an unbeaten 130 and bowled 40 overs of off-spin.

"West Indian officials have since been calling him up and saying they couldn't believe he was walking properly. They had been told he was unfit to play," the source said.

It's understood Hooper would have played under any other captain, even one of the younger players, but believes Lara should not be skipper because of past off-field troubles.

"Not one of the players in the side respects Lara," the source said. "Carl may be the first of several to leave the side."

And as the West Indian team is about to be rocked by the news Hooper will quit the team, the Australian tourists could be about to receive the one bit of news they have all been waiting for.

Glenn McGrath is expected to make an announcement within two days about re-joining the team after positive news about the condition of wife wife Jane, who is facing her second battle against cancer in six years.

The fast bowler abandoned his journey to the West Indies and rushed home last Thursday to be with her after she had was found to have a secondary cancer in her hip.

Other good news for the Australians is the return to full fitness of paceman Jason Gillespie.

Gillespie impressed in grabbing 2-13 off nine overs as Australia rolled the Guyanese President's XI for 132 in response to Australia's 3(dec)-377.

Captain Steve Waugh gave the South Australian two spells in which he convinced the team's medical staff he had overcome a heel injury.

In the past, I've been watching Hooper continually throw his wicket away after promising starts. :o

Probably the best summation of Hooper's behaviour was offered a couple of years ago by Michael Holding when Hooper was given the captaincy after having left international cricket a few years before.

"Hooper has turned his back on West Indies cricket on numerous occasions. For him to be brought back and made captain is a slap in the face for Caribbean cricket lovers.

"He has come back into West Indies cricket because of his selfish ways. He went to Australia and thought that he could have landed a lucrative contract there, but when the Australians paid him no mind, he decided to return to the Caribbean, after turning his back on West Indians when they needed him most. Why are we then rewarding this kind of behaviour?"

Prophetic words indeed. I always enjoyed Hooper playing the game but his actions on this occasion leave little doubt in my mind that he is a selfish and self-involved cricketer. The side is better without him.

Interesting in that I also believe he refused to do commentary of WI matches whilst he was captain. Yet he commentated in the World Cup.

I begs the question of who is more insecure Hooper or Lara. i'd pick Hooper because he spits the dummy if it doesn't go his way.

Lara spits the dummy pretty good. How many tours has he not done because he can't be bothered ?

Lara is a spoilt little brat. He would be the equal of Tendulkar if he wasn't the biggest pea-heart in cricket. He wouldn't last 5 minutes in the Australian team because of his attitude.

Apart from a disappointing World Cup, the Windies had started to show a bit of promise under Hooper, until Lara got into the ear of the selectors and pulled off some backstabbing worthy of a Carlton boardroom.

They'll continue to struggle until they sort out the inter-island differences that interfere with their cricket.

And that's unlikely to happen anytime soon since it's been happening ever since the Windies earnt test status.

How would feel getting the captaincy taken off you and given to Brian Lara, considering past events? Not too happy I wouldn't think.

It would almost tip the scales towards not playing for anyone, let alone a man such as Carl who places his family before cricket. If he's not captain, there isn't really a lot of motivation for him to stay there. After all, it was what brought him back in the frist place.

Perhaps, but the facts were that the results for the West Indies side hadn't improved in the Test arena - in fact their efforts at home had gotten worse. The lowlight being beaten at home by New Zealand with ease. And their wasn't much improvement away from home either. And he wasn't highly regarded as an expert tactician on the field either.

On the other hand, there seemed to be the nucleus for a competitive young side and there did seem to be a purpose in their cricket that was so sorely lacking under Jimmy Adams. Also from what I've read he did seem to be well-supported in the side.

The end result - the Windies are in a mess and will get annhilated by Australia.

The West Indies would have been better off appointing someone young and well respected and liked in the team like Ramnaresh Sarwan.

I cant see them troubling us in this test series despite Glenn McGrath not being available for the first part of the series.

Just out of interest, how do you know Sarwan is well respected and liked within the team?

Maybe Bennet King was the wrong man after all - and you were the right man?

Sarwan has a rich dad if that counts for anything (threw a big party for Carl jr's 2nd birthday).
