Looks like Currie is struggling to be fit for Round 1. I thought while Pyke tried hard against Port, there are too many deficiencies in his game for him to be considered as the backup. I really can't believe the coaches are really considering him as an option. Orreal is on the rookie list and while his improvement in 12 months has been impressive, he needs to add a few more kilos to his slight frame to compete with the likes of Lade and Charman.

Perhaps we'll go with a combination of White and LRT? Or will Goodes get the call to return to his 2003 Brownlow-winning position?

Very interesting question.

Pyke tried real hard and he's obviously very keen to learn and progress, but he's got a long way to go. I didn't see enough of Orreal today but he would also seem a long way from senior AFL standard.
That would leave White, and I'd be happy with that.
On game day we'd have either LRT or Goodes up the sleeve, and at least that would get White on the field and gaining experience.

I agree that Beanie has a lot to do but so does Pyke

Ah it sucks currie is injured that groin is a concern i hope it doesnt ruin his year

Ill be very pleased if Jake pushes really hard and stacks a few kilos on and makes selection sometime this year...will prove hes got what it takes

But Pyke will be good in time also....but cringe idd hate to think what we would have to do if Jolly went down (touch wood)

If Jolly went down then Roos would have no choice but to stick Adam Goodes in the ruck.

What is the problem with Curries groin?

Mike Pyke is another example of what I think is a misguided approach to finding good footy players. I listened to the game and it seemed he was a bit lost...Good footy players are brought up on the game, they watch AND play the game since they were young. I would want my club to recruit footballers rather than athletes.
White sounds like hes probably better off up forward if Currie comes along.

True for the most part. But we didn't waste a draft pick on him, we didn't have to trade for him - essentialy he's an experiment that cost us nothing. I'm not at all convinced he'll pick up enough knowledge/instinct about the game at the age of 24, having never watched the sport as a kid. But if it doesn't work out then no harm done. If it does, what a massive bonus that will be for us.

Plus it makes for a good media story. The only coverage the NAB cup game got this week in Sydney was related to Pyke debuting.

Roos seems to be leaning towards Pyke

And I agree while Pyke struggled Jake struggled just as much and has been exposed to the game a year longer.

Both are on a huge learning curve and what happened Yesterday was Pyke was thrown to the wolves against Broagan and Lade.

They'll both be sat down during the week and shown videos of their performance and for Pyke this will be his first proper video assessment.

The next lot of Practice games will be intense for both of them but If one needs to be called up over the other it would appear Roos is leaning to Pyke.

I agree, thats what rookies are all about. Id still want a rookie with a better chance of making it tho....:)
Goodes is wasted in the ruck. Hes better off in the forward line with the occasional stint in the midfield. IMO

It's not meant to be a slight on Pyke, but it really reeks of poor list management to have just 4 specialist ruckmen (arguable in Pyke's case), with 2 on the rookie list and with not much football experience between them. As Soph mentioned earlier, we'd be screwed big time if Jolly went down (touch touch touch wood)

I really hope to see Goodes thrown back into the ruck even if it is only part time just to give Jolly a break.

I mean Jolly rucks the first 15 minuets of a 1/4 then we throw Goodes into the ruck to finish the 1/4 off his athleticism would be superb Not to mention the amount of damage he could do without a proper tagger would only be a bonus (Can you see Lade or Brogan keeping up with Goodes)

I mean ATM we are pretty covered for midfield spots lets jsut throw Goodes into our weakest area and see what happens...

The rules have changed with the run up so his knee is far less likely to get hurt.

We've tried the Goodes in the ruck strategy since his injury - I think LRT takes the centre bounces and then Goodes does the rest around the ground. Worth a punt, and I'd feel more comfortable with that setup than Pyke or Orreal at the moment.

Well until Curries Groin feels better (im working on it ;) lol) we have no choice than to rotate Pyke, Jesse, Beanie and Maybe Goodes through the ruck!

But come on people who say Jake and Pyke wont make it coz they arnt good enough...its these sort of games out of a lower level like the ressies where they really start to take what they have learnt and put it into practice...yes i know its all well and good to be that much better...but some need to have a game or two before things begin to lock into place!

I really do hope Jake and Pyke are both given chances to player at a senior level this year...as being rookies it would benefit them in ways you couldnt teach them in the ressies/canberra league

Until Currie gets better we've gotta train up the ones who have a role so they can use it and be good at it

once again...Give the boys a chance im sick of people being so harsh for someone whos only been at the club for a matter of months...this is why we have contracts so they can work on it...if they dont improve and fall out of contract then fair enough BUT GEEZE Jakes still got a year to go on his and is still "being developed" and shit if you have watched him like i have you would notice the things he has been through to get to where he is now...wait till hes 100+ kg hes going to be great

but for now be bloody happy we have a few rucks some teams only have two

Who is being harsh? They are currently not good enough to play AFL 'season proper' football. If the coaches wish to play them for a couple of practice matches to see if they improve I am all for it. But they will not be ready for regular season football and I will be extremely disappointed if either line-up in Round One.

The Sydney Swans are NOT a charity case, and we should play footballers on their merits. This is not a feel good lovey dovey game. This is a business and we need to put the most competant footballers on the park.

At this stage neither Orreal nor Pyke are in that domain.

If Currie is not ready then LRT should provide backup with White offering assistance alongside Jolly if required.

EDIT: We only have two ruckman by the way. Neither Orreal nor Pyke have proven themselves to be ruckman yet ;) ;)

The problem is that it has been proven that LRT is a MUCH better player when he plays in defence full time. When he has the play in defence and the ruck he doesnt play that well.

despite the article i'm still very confident that currie will be the second ruckman

currie only has minor concerns... nothing significant to suggest that he will be unavailable for lengths of the season, let alone rd 1

plus it was the journalists impression of the situation, not the clubs stance that pyke or orreal will be used ahead of currie

to prove my point that journalists know jack all... jack niall called pat veszprmi last season.... adam

Still, Roos said he had a preference for Pyke over Orreal which means he has a new favourite which means we can be assured of Pyke playing Seniors this season at some point.

Dont get me wrong im DYING for Currie to debut i mean i just bought a new jumper so i could put his name and number on it...but if this groin of his is going to cause a problem...which it has a few times already...we need to develop others just incase we were to have issues with Jolly or who ever else we throw into the ruck...might as well get McVeigh to do the job no one seems to want the boys who we are training to be ruckmen doing the job

I'm actually really keen on Pyke and don't mind him being thrown in with no experience - as I said no matter what he's an improvement on what Everitt was dishing out at the end of his career and we still won a Final with it.
