Last night got me thinking how unlucky me and my bestmate (other room mate) have been with our 3rd housemates we have had. My ****ing housemate brings home his mates at 2.30am and starts playing music and shit. Last I checked the time it was 3.40am and I was still awake cause of these ***** being so noisy. I woke up this morning at around 10am to go to uni for the first day back and theres people lying on our couches and shit still which is the second time this has happened in 3 days. It was a ****ing Monday Night/Tuesday Morning for christs sake.

Me and my mate have had 3 guys live with us since I moved out of home. Worst things they have done off the top of my head are:

Housemate 1 - A guy who moved up to uni with us:

Once left a kilo of raw chicken in the microwave for two days. We came home from being out all day and couldn't figure out the smell until one of us opened the microwave and almost puked due to the smell being so bad.

Once came home after work one night to see our lounge room completely full of clothes and shit. The guy said he was cleaning his room so he had moved everything out of it into the lounge room and left it there over night. Probably just dumped it in a mess again after doing all that.

Every ****ing time he left the house he would always leave everything turned on. That included the TV, lights, his laptop with music cranked playing non stop, everything.

Probably did the dishes and completed them maybe once in the year and a half he lived with us.

Housemate 2 - This Kenyan bloke who answered an ad we put up at uni. Little did we know he had servants and shit doing all the work for him back home:

Never did the dishes once in the time he lived with us.

Actually now I think about it he was pretty good but just a ****en dirty bastard.

Housemate 3:

Had a bucks party for his mate and didn't clean up the back padio (which is where it was) for two weeks so I had to do it.

Has had one of his mates sleep over our house atleast 10 times. **** off already and get your own house you freeloading prick.

Last Night.

Worst thing is about this guy is that I work with him so I can't break the peace cause there's nowhere to escape so we can cool down.

Re: Shithouse Housemates

1) Tell him to move out.

2) Accuse him of stealing at work so you don't have to see him there either.

3) Get another flat mate, female, they usually clean up after themselves.

Re: Shithouse Housemates

My ex-housemate left a used tampon on the bench in the bathroom

Why the hell is it being put on the bench in the first place?

I guess my theory is gone then.

Worst part of the story is that it was wrapped in a tissue so I picked it up and threw it in the toilet. When I picked it up I noticed it was heavy and straight away knew it wasn't full of boogers :(

Re: Shithouse Housemates

When I had a shared house I had ONE main rule.

It's MY HOUSE, what I say goes!!!

Unfortunately we learn the hardway that although it's nice to be nice and matee with housemates .... you must also be in charge.

My lesson was over 10 years ago.
Housemate 1 was a truckie who ended up going to Jail for Vehicular Manslaughter.
Housemate 2 was a young fella who had a girlfriend and after asking if it was OK bought a dog into the house.
Housemate 3; Was a "smoker" and also a courier and a friend of Housemate 1 and they shared his room.

When housemate 1 went off to Jail housemate 3 took over the room and all was ok for a few months ... then 2 and 3 took advantage of my softness and fell behind on rent.
One Friday Housemate 1 arrived out of the blue saying his sentence had been over ruled, so after a night of celebration the next morning all three set off to go up to the Jail and collect his stuff. I had words with housemate 3 about money insisting I need the two of them to pull their weight as housemate 1 will need help from all three of us to get back on his feet. The discussion got heated and housemate 3 headbutted me and then went out to the van and off they went ...... so I called the Cops and asked wtf could I do. Turns out they were basically using me ... squatters ... and as I was on a month to month lease the Cops suggested I move out that day. I called a removalist and he said don't touch anything and within 1 hour the guys arrived taped everything closed and loaded it onto the truck. Just as the removal truck was about to move the housemates rolled up ... housemate 3 was in tears as he and I got on pretty well or we did when he realised I'd had enough, I just told em I was out of there and the house was theirs...

Housemate 1 was in a bind as if he didn't live at that address he had to go back to prison and housemate 2 was just going along with whatever. I moved everything into my parents garage and stayed in their spare room while I sorted things out. Come Monday I went back to find housemate 1 alone with housemate 2's Dog sitting in his room all sad and lonely... turned out 2 and 3 moved out and housemate 1 told me of his plight .... I moved back for the Doggy and she became my little puppy dog.

Housemate 1 was good in a way he could always be relied on money wise, but he was a pig.... every housemate has good and bad sides it's all about compromise. He moved with me when I found a better house and much better housemates.

That's bullshi*t. I hate that attitude. I shared with a friend who owned the house. That's what he told me. I was paying good money for living there. As long as I wasn't being noisy or dirty why shouldn't I have a say in what goes on?

My worst sharing experience was in Taiwan when I shared with two American guys who were fresh out of the college dorm scene in the US. We were actually good friends and got along well but they were so noisy. We worked at the same place. We got home at 5. They would go to bed and get back up at 11 and party all night. It was an apartment so you couldn't escape the noise. When I told them to turn it down a bit they stared at me as if I was an alien. I had to buy earmuffs in the end. One time they both went back to the US for holidays. One of the guys locked his room and left his alarm clock on so the alarm went off continually for two weeks.

Re: Shithouse Housemates

Worst I had was a housemate who occasionally was late with the rent because he spent his money on meth.

Another housemate did about 1 hour worth of housework in a whole year, and he'd make the biggest deal if you asked him to help with the dishes, as if it was a huge inconvenience.

I'd live with the meth guy again, as he doesn't do meth anymore and was a top housemate otherwise. But I'd never live with the housework-phobic guy, as he was too lazy and his vegan diet meant that you couldn't use the toilet for over an hour after he took a dump.

Re: Shithouse Housemates

I have never had good experiences with housemates, always end up being ripped off. My kids are nagging me to get someone to share the house I am in at the moment, because I am struggling with the rent, but I told them I will end up worse off if I take in a housemate.

Re: Shithouse Housemates

A housemate I had a couple of years ago ended up being a nightmare to live with.

He was ok to start with but then he turned from being a recreational drug user with the rest of us into having pretty much a daily speed habit. Which meant he went from being a pretty decent guy into a complete schizo prick. He also started dealing too. Nothing too major - just to a few friends - but it certainly didn't make him any easier to live with because he started having these grand delusions that he couldn't trust anyone because he was in the process of building some great drug empire.

He didn't work so he used to sleep all day while the rest of us were at work. Then he'd get up and get on the gear all night while the rest of us were trying to sleep. Which wasn't so bad in itself - except that he would absolutely crank the stereo all night. It was so loud the neighbours called the cops a few times so you can imagine how loud it was for those of us trying to sleep 10 metres away. Unfortunately he had a hold over the guy who owned the house so kicking him out wasn't an option.

Some nights you could get up and turn the music down and he would give you a smile and apologise. But occasionally he'd get aggressive for no reason over the smallest things.

I got up one night to see him standing over the smallest guy we were living with and when I went to try calm him down I ended up being pushed through a window. I had to go down the hospital in the middle of the night to get a gash in my back stitched up. And not long after that he ended up holding a knife to my throat after he snapped during a minor argument. I moved out pretty soon after that.

I didn't see him for months after that until I heard he'd tried to kill himself and had been put under psychiatric care. I'm back in contact with him now he's cleaned his act up and he's back to being the pretty decent guy he was in the beginning.

Re: Shithouse Housemates

Honestly mate, after 5 years of doing the housemate thing through uni and work in Perth...

Live with chicks.

Honestly most single blokes are pigs to live with, and when several of us congregate it just multiplies. Dirty pricks that leave shit laying everywhere, come home pissed and just annoy the piss out of you etc etc.

After 2 years of that i had all girl housemates and its a dream in comparison. You have to deal with the odd hormone imbalance related temper tantrum/drama. But most are clean and much easier to live with than other blokes.

Some go the other way where its over the top neatness, but you can usually vet that in the interview, and at worst its still better than living in a shithole.

Just don't shag em

They were fun days, but i'm not sad they're over :D

Re: Shithouse Housemates

You have to give him the ultimatum and let him know what isn't cool ... if you don't see improvement then kick him out.

I'll third the female housemate idea ... close to impossible to find a decent male housemate.

but if someone's paying you rent....isn't it their house too for the time being?

You need one boss in the home for a share house to work, sure everyone is equal .... but the person with their name on the lease is MORE equal and must have the last word.

When I was renting in sharehouses (once with another bloke and once with a woman) I wanted both names of the lease. You need to cover yourself, what if they damage part of the property or dont pay their rent on time, I would not want to be solely responsible for that.

But if they don't want to add their names to the lease they have to accept that your are the head tenant and what you say goes.

Glad I'm not sharing a house with you then. That attitude stinks. If we are paying equal rent, then there should be equal say in what goes on in the house. When someone takes the "I'm the boss" attitude is usually when things start to turn pear-shaped. If I want to get bossed around, I go to work - home is a place where you should be able to relax, not have some bint in your ear harassing you about what is ultimately an insignificant house issue. If your flatty is a hard core druggy, a complete slob or doesn't pay his rent/bills, then fair enough - but otherwise, let people live their lives.
The worst house situations are when people penny pinch over their bread/milk etc etc... I live with friends and couldn't give a rats arse if they drink my milk or eat my bread, I'll just get some more, or they will, next time we venture to the shops. Seriously, I waste money in so many other areas, it is ridiculous to arc up about someone knocking off the last of the weetbix or knocking off my toast. :D Everyone is adult enough to know what is acceptable level of noise/cleanliness/whatever. Living in a share house shouldn't be some kind of mock dictatorship like you describe Tess... if you want to nag and boss someone around, get a dog. :)

You take it the wrong way J-T, what I mean is in any ultimate situation whoever is on the lease must have the ultimate say. I had a 4br 1 bungalow 1 BATHROOM house with 5 adults and every other week 4 or 5 kids and it worked because we had a good understanding of where everyone stood. We didn't have 5 adults all pulling in different directions, we had 5 adults living together without stepping on toes and respecting peoples personal space.
