How are they issued? One per series?, match?, when needed as needed?
I remember hearing Waugh (S) say he would never sell his, and I assumed nobody did. Well there is one for sale on eBay starting at 2.5k. Not going to post the link, in case I'm accused of advertising it! Rod Marsh amd Brian Luckhurst involved. Look for it yourselves!

PS its now at 7.3K!!!

I'm pretty sure you get one when you are first selected, then only a replacement if it is lost / stolen / destroyed. Steve Waugh is, obviously, very attached to his and proud of the fact he has had only the one cap throughout his career. Others probably go through 2 or 3 or more caps.

I wonder if some players may even claim to have lost a cap to get a 2nd, 3rd or whatever so they can later sell them (or just to have a couple at home on display)

However, there is one thing that has me baffled (well, many things, but I'll raise this one ;)). The 12 man gets a cap, as do any tourists when we go overseas. If they don't end up playing a test, do they have to give that cap back?

I was always under the impression that you were issued with one, which would only be replaced if it was lost or damaged.

Didn't the ACB issue Baggy Green Caps to their players for every new series?? I'm sure I heard this mentioned somewhere... probably explains why there's a few floating around at auctions, eBay, etc etc.

I'm glad the ACB changed that policy... one Baggy Green per player is definately better... the players just have to look after them better.

If you are selected to go on an Ashes tour or a West Indies tour etc and have never played a test you will recieve a Baggy Green cap if you play in on of the warm up matches.

In 1997 Darren Berry replaced Adam Gilchrist on the Ashes Tour. Bec ause he played a few of the matches against County teams he recieved a baggy green cap.

Simon Katich was presented one on his first tour (Sri Lanka?) when he was 12th man and handed it back afterwards because he said he wanted to earn one properly, which he duly did.
Caps are presented one off, unless damaged or lost these days.
But in the old days players were generally presented with one per series, which is why there are several Donald Bradman caps about. He used to just give his away after a series.
English players were presented with them quite regularly in the past as well, hence the term Harold Larwood received 12 test caps, for example.
There is a tradition among more modern players of not giving their caps away, due to the tradition of the cap, however, the evolution of sports paraphanalia market, which has increased significantly over the past 10 years, has see n that ideal change. Another probable reason that so many players are selling caps is possibly because of the change of the sport itself. The amateur ideal of the past would have seen players reticent to sell their hats, not because of fear of anger, but it just wasn't in the make up. Now that sport is more of a business, there is less in the emotional make up to stop players selling their caps. That's my opinion anyway.

I don't see any problem with ex-players flogging them off, especially as some have done it b/c they are in genuine financial strife. An ex-OZ capt being a recent example.
As long as they don't become a mass-retail item - this was Waugh's worry. Besides, its not a very attractive or practical cap, and I can't see a bunch of teenagers walking around with them. Its of value as a symbol as being selected as a test player.

Well if Rod Marsh swapped it for an mcc touring cap, then he couldn't have prized it too highly, although he might have been drunk at the time.

Do they put a little white tag with the players name on it inside the cap. Just in case the caps get mixed up in the changeroom?

Years ago players would receive a new baggy green each tour they went on, and it would be embroidered with the tour under the coat of arms, eg 1964-65 v West Indies. This is why there is a plethora of baggy green caps up for auction.

Later on they adopted the current system where a player is given one cap and that is expected to last him for his entire test career.

I believe Don Bradman received 13 green baggy caps during his playing career.

Not sold for 10.1K - passed in. The vendor might have been doing some fishing.
