So my boyfriend is going on a work conference to Bali in November and partners are welcome to come along. I've never been before (might be the only person in Perth who hasn't) and I need some tips and recommendations! We're thinking about staying on an extra few days and getting a villa in Seminyak. Also some tips on how to avoid getting sick would be great- my stomach only has to look at sus food and I'm straight to the toilet.

Bottled water is a must but the food is always good and personally I've never had an issue with it. Go the Villa in Seminyak, far better than a hotel and you can live like a King if you get the right one. Most will cook breakfast for you and take care of any household chores. Last one we stayed at had a cook on call and a couple of scooters ready waiting and a security guard based out the front 24/7.

I once got super drunk and woke up in the shower with water running it's the thing i do if i need to sober up in 3 hours to go do something.

for some reason 36 hours later I almost shat myself flying back. I had to cancel two dates lined up as well.

Bottled water, You would be super unlucky to get food poisoning. Restraunts are clean enough, even the divey looking ones,

Depends what you enjoy doing.

Plenty of beaches and surfing and if you want to head to the middle of the Island there is stuff to do there as well: Rafting, Zoo, Coffee Plantation, Waterfalls, Cultural Shows/Tours (thou I found them boring and skipped that part of a tour I had planned).

Kuta can be really seedy but if that is your thing go for it.

Most things are really cheap but the tourist shops and Western Resort type Restaurants can be expensive. Most restaurants are good depending on where you stay you could always buy food and cook.

Bottled water.

And if you don't want anything on the street/be hassled by vendors just be polite but firm don't slow down and engage or you will be surrounded.

Has its good and bad sides like most places but Bali is more extreme in that sense. Also still technically a developing country so is a lot of poverty around still.

What about in the event that I do get sick? Do those anti-diarrohea tablets actually work? Thinking I could probably take some over.

Don't drink any of the local beer as it kills a lot of people
The chemist sells good stuff to help with hang overs
Mushrooms are now illegal over there. Is still easily available! (If you work in mining or oil & gas they don't test for them);)
The stuff they say is cocaine is illegal and apparently terrible!
All of the well know brands you see in the stalls are fakes
Don't eat any of the salads as they are washed in tap water! Same with ice cubes
Pick pockets everywhere
Make bartering when buying something fun & take note
Rent a scooter around $8 a day and explore the island! If pulled over by the cops $ talks
Other wise enjoy and have fun like every holiday it's what you make of it

I've been to Bali 5 times over 7 years. Know people who've been plenty as well.

When you say local beer, do you mean Bintang? Or like a local moonshine/arak? I've had many, many a Bintang. Cocktails made in less tourist friendly areas have been known to be dangerous.
Also had many a salad and drink with an ice cube in it. No sickness ever. I think this was a problem about 20 years ago but not anymore.
Never had a problem with pick pockets. No one I know who's been has had problems with this. Not to say it doesn't happen, but to say they're "everywhere" might be excessive.

no some of the other local brews! bintang is a save bet.
maybe so with the ice cubes, i did only drink them when mixed with alcohol never with out

i was pick pocketed a few years ago & they do warn you but have found europe worse

Watch out for the monkeys. One stole my wallet at breakfast today. Had to chase it all over the island with the locals to get it back. Got most of my money back, I think. I reckon one of the stall owners may have pocketed a few Aussie dollars. Other than that, the locals were so helpful, they returned everything they found to me. Although the monkey did rip my credit card in half, the top right off the bottom of the card! It was this monkey I had photographed enjoying the cream off Oreos only moments before LOL

I blame myself for letting the monkey get so close to me and my belongings. There were signs around but I guess I didn't take much notice. Won't stop me coming back every year.

Anyway, apart from that little issue that happened on my first day here, Bali is awesome. I would live here if there was work for me. I honestly wouldn't worry about a thing while you are here. The locals are friendly, everyone is helpful and as long as you don't buy any food off the street vendors you should be fine.

Try the Nasi Goreng everywhere you go. I ****ing love it!!!

I'm gonna say that steet vendor food is awesome.

Love me some of that spicy corn on the cob they do.

I went to a restaurant and had seafood. The days after I felt not so great. It is soooo common. However I recommend lots of water and to eat heaps. To flush the Bali belly away.

I really like Bali although it's a bit too touristy for me. Hope you enjoy it

I'm equal parts excited and apprehensive. Mainly because I get sick so easily and I don't want to ruin the trip by being stuck in the hotel. I've been reading you should drink lots of Yakult before you go over there. Maybe I should start now lol

Make sure to get to Chungu instead of Seminyak. Chungu is more relaxing and far less busy.

Cafe Ruko is terrific and donates money to help fund local childrens education.

You'll be fine, food hygiene wise Bali is way better than it used to be, especially in the main touristy areas. As others have said, drink bottled water and use it to brush your teeth. Be careful of eating salads, etc in cheap places where it could be washed in dirty water. Maybe take some gastrolyte or similar if you have a dodgy stomach.

I don't trust myself on bikes(seen too many accidents..), so usually get cabs or a driver. You should be able to get a driver for about $50/day or so to go sightseeing or if you get cabs, make sure they are metered which will be cheaper.

If you are going a place like Uluwatu where there are lots of monkeys, grab a big stick to walk around with, works a treat to scare the little bandits off.

Main thing is just go enjoy yourself, the people are really friendly, even if they go the hard sell a bit. Just smile, laugh it off and they generally leave you alone. Have fun!
