No, this isn't a thread about Sam Mitchell, I'm referring to Ball Snr, the Hawthorn version, Mathew Ball.

I thought he had a great game today. Didn't have trouble finding the pill with his decision making and odd disposal being weak. Kick out Lads... I mean Ries and keep Ball ;).

Ball and Ries were fantastic IMO.

Ball got a lot of the ball and used it quite well, knew his limitations.

Ries was pumped and was effective in the midfield.

We were tough, rough and tackled hard. It was pleasing to see.

I had Ries and Ball on my list for certain delisting at seasons end. Although their suprising form yesterday warrants selection again, certainly over the likes of Harry Miller (gawn). Vanders should wait his turn as well although that's not going to happen.

Hats off to both Ries and Ball, they are dropped every other week yet keep coming back and putting in 100%. You can't ask much more! Good work boys.

They put in because they know this is their last chance at playing AFL. Unfortunaltely they can't sustain this sort of effort week in week out - a reason they play most of their footy at BH.
The last 7 rounds will be used to play the juniors like Dowler, Ellis, Tuck & Bailey but also to see if Ries, Ball, Thurgood, Dawson (who looked totally lost again yesterday) Miller, Brennan & Boyle can play at the highest level. Thurgood & Brennan are in trouble. We are missing 4 regular defenders and they still cant get a game.
You'd expect one of Boyle or Brennan to come in for Barker next week. Whoever misses will most likely be trade bait.

I thought Dawson was good yesterday. Looked more confident, made a lot of spoils and tackled well. Just needs to find more of the ball.

to be honest, i cant stand ball and he is one player i think he should be de-listed, but then again i thought the same of ladson and clarke but no i love them both.

Ball and Ries have a role to play and do it very well , they are never going to stars of the game, but are very servicable players which every team needs.

The question is do we have too many servicable players and not enough quality players to take us over the top? You can throw Thurgood, Boyle and Brennan into the mix as well. I assume some delistings will ultimately come from this group and I would say these guys will get an opportunity to prove themsleves over the remainder of the season.

Of Ellis, Dowler, Tuck & Bailey I can only see possibly Bailey and Dowler getting a game late in the year. Personally I'd hold them off until next year.

I want two Balls.

Been pretty happy with Bally the last two games - some rocket handpasses out of the congestion - like to see him play the rest of the year to prove to everyone where he's at.

Ball > Ries.

You sure that wasnt Sewell ;)

Pretty sure Ball is a better player than Ries. He has better skills and can play in the middle and doesn't look out of place.
Ries isn't given enough time in the middle and is just played on a flank where he can't do much.

I'm pleased that Matty is being given the long last opportunity to resurrect his career.
