He will be missed he is a very good operator and handles the media with honesty but never gives away too much at all at the same time without making it look like obvious spin.

He has generated alot of negativity, probably because he has a positive personality where alot of Collingwood supporters, especially those who post on the net, would rather a ruthless efficient nazi-Germany like football manager.

With Swan looking after the football side of things and Walsh also being added the writing was on the wall for Balme and Kleiman.

Exactly, some Collingwood 'supporters' don't relaise that the players, the coach and the president are not the only factors that go into creating a successful footy club and Balme will be missed sorely, he had great relationships with the players and the staff alike, the morale within the Collingwood camp is certainly not at the highest at the minute, Geoff Walsh will be an interesting one, probably won't be given as much time as Balme to get his eye in and may find he is under fire if they don't perform next year.

I wouldn't listen to most of the Collingwood supporters on here, most of them wouldn't have a clue what his role was, let alone if he was doing a good job or not.
He had substantial sway in most areas of football. Recruiting, negotiation, coaching (was a specialist ruck coach at one stage), media managment and the welfare of the players.

In all areas except for playing "Iraqi Information Minister" to the media, he failed more than once, and quite publically.

That he gave good service was true, but so is the fact that his results were substandard.

I get the feeling this sort of criticism is aimed at me for my 'meh' comment. Perhaps it is true that I didn't know his role all too well except for the fact he was football operations manager and I'm sure alot of people wouldn't know the exacts of his job. I do realise that to have a successful club you need to have a steady support base of staff off the field but it is of general consensus that Neil did his job to the standard required. He was solid without being exceptional and the media attention resulting from the signing of Geoff Walsh suggested we were getting a better candidate and from then on it looked doubtful that Balmey would get a job.

The meh comment was just that we'd signed up a better person for the job, we'd traded up and the result announced today was writing on the wall.

Thanks for the analysis (and to you others too), it's nice to get some coherent feedback! I hope he works for Geelong. Best of luck guys!

My old man has a bloke working for him who also has a role with Norf, and he rates Walsh extremely highly, and he reckons he's a fantastic pick up for the Pies and a big loss for the Paupers.

Will be interesting to see what Walsh brings and how he can use resources which aren't on a dole bludger's budget.

If he’s had a role in recruiting then it’s been bad. If he’s the spin doctor then who needs it? PR is very important for clubs on the breadline and for where we were a few years back but we don’t have to worry about the next buck. If he’s had a role in player development then a trade for Donald Duck would be a plus. What did he do? Whatever it was I’m sure one of the other 3 CEOs can either do it or make sure it gets done better.
