Bart McCulloch in the Draft

Year 12 Scotch Oakburn student, who is also a Tassie Mariner and South Launceston ruckman, was invited to this year's AFL national draft camp as one of only 5 players from Tasmania. 18 year old Bart, who is 198cm and 89kg, attended the camp held in Canberra at the AIS between 30 September and 3 October. Bart has had preliminary discussions with a number of AFL clubs. Out of the 75 who attended the camp, around 55 will be drafted. Good luck Bart!

Caught in up-draft
BRETT STUBBS
November 26, 2008 09:10am

AT least three Tasmanians will start their AFL careers on Saturday after the national draft.
AFL Tasmania high-performance manager Nick Probert said Lauderdale's Mitch Robinson, 19, Glenorchy's Aaron Cornelius, 18, and 17-year-old Liam Jones, who has spent the past year at Melbourne's Scotch College, were almost certainties to be chosen.
South Launceston's Bart McCulloch, at 199cm, is considered the next most likely to be drafted.

Bart heads off to play with the Brisbane Lions

Eighteen year old Scotch Oakburn ruckman Bart McCulloch (Year 12) has been drafted to the Brisbane Lions. Bart is considered a mobile, athletic and versatile ruckman who can play as a tall forward (198.9cm) with good pace and endurance for a player of his size. Bart has been a Tasmanian U-18 representative in the NAB AFL U-18 Championships, and has played for the Tassie Mariners/South Launceston. Bart admires the playing styles of Jonathan Brown (Lions) and Nick Riewoldt (Saints). Congratulations and good luck Bart.

Selection 69: Bart McCulloch
11:09 AM Sat 29 November, 2008

Date of birth: 23/9/90
Height: 198cm
Weight: 83kg
Club: South Launceston

Bio: Mobile for his size, McCulloch is versatile as a ruckman or tall forward and has displayed clean skills low to the ground.

Tasmania U18 coach Andrew Mellor says: For a player of his height Bart's a very good ground-level player. In addition to that he has a real ability to cover the ground well, and those are pretty special qualities for a kid that tall. We used him as a key forward and also as a ruckman and we even threw him out on a wing on the odd occasion because he has such good endurance. We probably needed him to take more contested marks, but he started to do that in the last two or three games that he played.

Stats: NAB AFL Under 18 Championships
TeamMt K HB D M HO T G
Tas 8 5.0 4.1 9.1 3.3 3.6 1.6 0.9

In his own words

Strengths?

My agility and endurance for someone my height.

Weaknesses?

I’ve realised I haven’t taken enough contested marks not really worked hard to throw myself into every contest and try and get my hands on them.

AFL team you support?

Carlton. I’ve followed them all my life.

Which AFL players do you try to model yourself on?

As a centre half-forward I follow Jonathan Brown and in particular Nick Riewoldt for his athleticism, the running ability he uses to take a lot of marks and his hard work. I really like to see players when they’re working hard because they deserve everything they get. And I think Nick Riewoldt, you always see him busting really hard to get to the right position and work hard, so I follow him more than anyone.

Re: Bart McCulloch

Can i get on as number 3 on the bandwagon. It must be easy to find clips of midfielders breaking the lines running and bouncing. but this guys 198 cms. I dont follow the whole draft thing that closely but he looks a real prospect.

Richmond recruiting manager Francis Jackson revealed the Tigers wanted to take Tasmanian Bart McCulloch with pick 70 but the Brisbane Lions snagged the ruckman at pick 69.

`` We got plotted by Brisbane who took a player we were going to take at pick 70,’’ Jackson said.

``That’s part of the caper.’’

It also explains why the Tigers passed on their last pick.

Burgo's Phantom Draft

67 – ESSENDON – BART McCULLOCH
Tassie Mariners, TAS, Ruckman, September 23, 1990, 198.9cm, 86kg
(Draft range: 49-not selected)

There is a school of thought McCulloch could be anywhere from a top-30 selection through to a rookie. Overall, the consensus is the Tasmanian ruckman will get drafted. Along with the Bombers, Fremantle, Geelong, Port Adelaide, Richmond and West Coast have all shown interest. He is more than likely to be a 50-plus selection. Tyson Slattery, Cockie, Thompson and Hayden Skipworth are others under consideration. But the Dons are keen to add to their ruck division, with McCulloch being a sought after prospect late.

Pre-draft Profile

Bart McCulloch – 198cm, 83kg – South Launceston.
Ruckman from Tasmania who had a pretty good champ series. He has a bit to work on in his tap work but he sticks with the job and wears opponents down. He has good pace for a tall and can find the ball around the ground. His kicking could use some more consistency but overall his skills are pretty good. Can take a good mark and does not mind going for a run with the ball. Athletically he is very good. Being 198cm he was a bit undersized for the ruck but clubs will see potential for him to play in other areas.
Possible selection some time after the third round.

Draft Profile

Bart McCulloch is yet another Tasmanian who the Lions have taken a liking too. He is a 198cm ruckman who is very mobile and not your typical lumbering ruckman. He has very good endurance for a young player and can be also be used as a key forward. McCulloch will be given time to develop as he is still quite raw so don’t expect to see a lot of him in the AFL next season. His ruckwork and foot skills still need improvement but I’m sure they will improve as he gets more experience under his belt.

Draft Profile

No. 69 BART MCCULLOCH (South Launceston, Tasmania) 18, 199cm (6'5"), 86kg (189): Very mobile ruckman with good endurance for a player of his size. Represented Tasmania for the U-18 tournament. Also very good at ground level for his size.

Phantom Drafts:

Official

56. Bart McCulloch - 198cm Ruck / Utility. Watched a little of his play and liked what I saw. Has good speed and agility for a big guy, and takes them on. As Quigley said in the trial draft, could be a CHB / KP Back type if not a ruckman with the pace he has off the mark. Skills seem to be mainly there as well.

Quigley

46. Collingwood

Bart McCulloch (DOB – 23/9/90, Ht – 199, Wt – 83)

McCulloch is another of the plethora of ruck sized utility players available this year. He played up forward and in the ruck for Tasmania and whilst he was not dominant in either position his athleticism makes him an intriguing prospect. He is at his best when he is given room to run and he effectively becomes another wing when he is given his head. He has exceptional pace and agility for a player of his size and seems to do things pretty well at pace which you don’t see from many players his size. Up forward he gets out on the lead well and has reasonable but not great hands. He does not always lead to the best spots though and does not use his height to full advantage up forward. In the ruck he is a little undersized and his ruck skills need work and I probably see him as a pinch hitter in the ruck at AFL level. His disposal skills are pretty good and comparable at least with most of the key position prospects available this year. Kicking style wise I think he is good although he can miss targets from time to time. At AFL level I see him as a CHB capable of matching up on the likes of Franklin and not giving away much in the way of height, athleticism, or pace. He will also run off extremely well and force those he matches up on to work hard the other way. He will go into the ruck for periods and again his around the ground ability will challenge most rucks in the AFL. He is an interesting prospect and he reminds me a bit of Lobbe last year who went a lot earlier than most of us expected last year.

# 79 Essendon - Bart McCulloch (Tasmania / 198 / 83)

This kid really intrigued me in the games I watched him play. Tall lad who is lightly framed but seems terrificlly athletic. Played all over the ground but mainly FF and Ruck in the games I saw and was very solid. Would strike me as a player that a club would think they could mould into someone who could play a variety of roles and that would make him attractive. Has very good pace for a kid his size and skills are above average as well. Could be a bolter in the 3rd or 4th rounds to be honest.

ant555

59) North Melbourne – Bart McCulloch
Tall mobile forward / ruckman from Tasmania.
Not sure he will be tall enough to play ruck but his mobility and pace for a tall are eye catching. Has a nice leap and could be groomed to play defence or forward.

#57 – Brisbane – Bart McCulloch – 198cm, 83kg, 23-Sep-90, Tassie Devils

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnIQ...ww.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=518575

Young ruckman who suffered from some injuries in 08, but is still almost a 100% chance to be drafted.
Brisbane will be in the market at some stage for a young talented ruckman to develop under Charman and add to a combo with Leuenberger in the future, and McCulloch would suit them perfectly.
He still has a bit of growth in him, will probably get to 200cm, and 100kg, and he is very athletic and good at ground level.
Add to that the fact he is from Tassie and there is no real go home factor for McCulloch who I believe could be a really handy ruckman, and especially a second stringer to a talent like Leuenberger.
Leuenberger and McCulloch would be a nice combo by 2012.
McCulloch can also go forward.
Draft Prediction: 4th round selection

Re: Bart McCulloch

There is a bit of Corey McKernan about him - he is taller than Corey and could grow a little perhaps - he certainly played well all around the ground on that video.

I feel a little better(but not much) about the Joel Tippett decision after seeing that footage.

Re: Bart McCulloch

Consolidated Draft Profile

Bart McCulloch - (R) 23 September 1990, 198cm 83kg. Tas/South Launceston

"Jason McCartney: Bart McCulloch - He didn't have a super game, but he continued to impress. He kicked three goals from limited opportunities and played a lone hand up forward and in the ruck because Aaron Cornelius didn't have the greatest game against South Australia. Bart ended up being the main target and his mobility at 198cm - you'd think he'd have a pretty bright future."

"HFF 07: BART MCULLOCH 198cm 83kg RUCK/UTILITY South Launceston
Ruckmen/utility player from Tasmania, had an ok championships and was very mobile for a big man, tap work leaves alot to be desired for, but works hard all day, works around the ground nicely for a big bloke and could become a handy AFL player.
PROS: - Mobile, Agile, Work rate, Marking,
CONS: - Undersized for ruck, Skinny,
PREDICTION: 50 - 80"

"ant555: Bart McCulloch – 198cm, 83kg – South Launceston.
Possible selection some time after the third round."

"Jason McCartney: Bart McCulloch - Bart didn't get a lot against the Territory but I was impressed with him in game one. He has good agility for a big bloke and makes good decisions. He could be okay."

"Quigley: McCulloch – was not very impressive when he was playing up forward. When he moved into the ruck though the extent of his athleticism was there for all to see. He is excellent around the ground and his disposal is good. His ruck work though needs work."

Re: Bart McCulloch

after seeing that i know why they say he is a tall midfielder. he looks so well balanced gathering a lose ball and running and bouncing, something that is usually hard for someone 198cm tall.

dont think he will be a full time ruck, but someone who could pinch hit to help give our main rucks a lil break and hopefully free up clark to play up forward where he should be

Re: Bart McCulloch

If this kid can put muscle on, he'll be an absolute steal for you guys.

He moves like a midfielder, his skills are great for a big man and he can hurt the opposition on the scoreboard. One that I wanted Essendon to get with one of our later picks, but just wanted to let your supporters know that this guy has a big future.

Re: Bart McCulloch

In saying that he's undersized for the ruck, he is bigger than Charman (who has a poor leap and I think may even be shorter than his listed height of 197cm), and he is also credited as having a good leap. He had long arms as well, and excellent agility. So, I think it may not be such a stretch for him to improve his ruckwork if it is something that is focused on. The fact that he's also got very good endurance and pace would make him a good second ruck, in that he'd be able to wear down opponents and get to contests quicker and more often.

I can't see him as being a key position prospect at this stage, considering the lack of rucks and decent stocks of key position players on the list.
