N A Saturday morning three weeks ago, Clint Bartram finished training with Melbourne, climbed into his car and drove straight to Geelong.

The previous night, he had left his father Steve's hospital room only after asking one of the nurses whether she thought he would make it through the night. It was a question he'd had a long time to imagine asking, yet could still not believe he actually was asking it. "It was one of those times where you think: Is this really happening?" he said this week.

Walking back into the room, Bartram looked immediately for his dad, who was falling in and out of consciousness.

"I'm in the team tomorrow," he told him and Steve, with his eyes closed, responded in the very next second. "That's great, mate," he said, and it was the last real time the pair spoke.

Terrific fighter Bartram.

Incidentally, was fantastic on the weekend, nullified Kerr and if he can start kicking regular goals, he will be the damaging tagger we've been crying out for.
