Did anyone else choke on their dessert on Saturday night when a Channel 9 commentator gave an interesting explanation of the new 'BBFFC' logo?

First, he read the logo as 'BBFC'.

Second, he explained that 'BBFC' stands for 'Brisbane Bears Football Club'.

Third, he explains that Brisbane is wearing the letters to pay tribute to the Bears, because the name was changed when they became the Fitzroy Lions. (I swear I am not making this up)

Are these commentators on acid or something? I swear in the game against Melbourne I heard one them refer to Voss as "the 2000 Brownlow medallist".

The technology is even worse. Did anyone notice that in Round 2, the scoreboard in the top left hand corner briefly stated that Brisbane was playing Richmond? Where did that even come from? At least flashing up the name and stats of a St Kilda player 30 seconds after he'd turned the ball over was explicable.

I noticed that during the Essendon - Western Bulldogs game that James Hird came off 3 times in the first half - nothing strange there - but his replacement was Mark Alvey - who plays for the Bulldogs!!. You would think once is bad enough, but 3 times is shocking.

I heard all that other stuff you talked about as well. That's Dwayne Russell you should be venting your anger towards.

Yeah Dwayne-o it was with the BBFC bizzo. The mass exposure comments like that get, combined with the stupidity of the general public, really put us behing the 8 ball when it comes to erasing the popular notion that the BLs are merely the Bears in drag.

And good to see Channel Fathead stuff up with Chris Johnson as well. At one stage they listed him as the 2001 Brownlow Medallist. Anyone see that?
Dwayne Russell coming out and saying how good their coverage was going to be. Sheesh. It certainly hasn't. I still cringe at that quip about "Two Harts and a Beau" (re: Valentines Day) during our Round 1 match.....Idiot.

can someone confirm it was Dwayne Russell who said this?
if so lets grab his email address and email him asking him to personally and publicly correct himself.... what a goose of a thing to say.

next he'll be saying the "FFC" on the back of the Western Bulldogs guernsey is a reference to Fitzroy from the proposed 89 merger between Fitzroy and Footscray! Or the Wizard Cup is sponsored solely by Jeff Farmer. What a dill.

had to *cringe* so many times during the coverage, they said some STUPID things.
'lappin it up' and the like are signs and not meant for general football calling

The one I hated the most was when there was a poor descision again Reiwalt (however that's spelt) and they go "So (name?), you would say that that was a rewolting decision

Don't forget, when it used to be called the "Foster's Cup" that was because it's previous sponsor, Panasonic, had bailed out, leaving the competition sponsorless, and therefore a 'Foster' sponsor had to be arranged! ;) :D

Well, if you've had a chance to listen to much football calling over the years, I think you'll find that this is no different to most calls of a game. Callers such as Tim Lane, Rex Hunt, Kevin Bartlett, Peter Daicos, etc., etc., ALL use similar types of 'catch-phrases' about certain players, or parts/aspects of the game.

I guess whether one finds it annoying or not is down to personal preference - just as it is as to whether you enjoy their sense of humour or not.

Apart from that, I wouldn't really say that it detracts from the overall call of the game - as long as the call is accurate, and reasonably un-biased.

Likewise, I find it much more annoying when commentators merely make comment for the sake of trying to look like they know something. Too many times, there are ex-footballers who just 'try' to say something important - and you end up thinking "why did they even bother mentioning that?". Dunstall is one of the biggest offenders, and Hawkins has been in for a dip as well.
