Hey demons ppl, first of all - this is my first post in ur forum, so congratulations on ur club snaring my favourite player a year ago.

Brent had a great first yr at the club, just wondering if anyone has any updates on how he's going this pre-season thus far?

cheers guys.

There havent been any reports of injuries to him and i think the fact that we havent heard much about him over pre-season is a good thing.

I'm sure hes training the house down and is ready for another big year.

On Beamer, does anyone else here think he needs to kick more goals and go for more tackles instead of bumps? He can lay a good hit but too often tries to take out the player where a tackle is required and players can go through him relatively easily.
Also his goalkicking this year was poor. He kicked 2.8 for the year, and although he is a superb kick inside 50 (IMO one of the best in the comp at hitting a leading target from long range) he tries to lay it off where he could nail it quite easily. I wouldn't mind seeing him used in a Stuart Dew type role where he is the go-to man when the inside 50 is choked up and let him have a shot because I believe he could nail quite a few.

It would be a waste of his talent to use him up forward too much, i'd put the over-use of bumps down to the exuburance of youth, thinking he can bump his way through the opposition. That will be coached out of him.

On his goal-kicking, he probably should kick more but as long as hes giving them off regularly, we shoudnt be too concerned, we have other goal-scoring midfielders like TJ, Bruce and Green to do that job.

His pre-season has been solid.
He's been working with other inside players like McLean, Read and Jones. His enthusiasm and competitive nature is something to marvel at.

I'd love to see him in a leadership role in a few years. He has all the right tools to become a gun player.

he does need to kick a few goals, the tackling is one of his problems defensively, but as long as he dishes fair bumps out i dont have much of a problem with that. a friend of mine had lunch with ND a few days ago, and he reckons beamer has improved his endurance heaps.

I'm not saying use him up forward (He is a pure midfielder) but when he has the chance take a shot. He does give off plenty but a few times last year he could have had a shot but was caught in two minds on whether passing it or kicking at goal.
When he's got the ball I'm fine when he's bumping because 70% of the time he won't get caught and I don't mind the occassional big hit but he does do it a bit too much. I do agree with you though that it should be out of his game in a while and he will still dish them out but not as regularly but with more force :D .

Neale has said that Beamer is currently in the progress of doing the best "pre season" that he has see any player in his time as a (player or coach) do. When i heard that news, jumped on him each way for the brownlow, the next night saw him out hitting it quite. Funny how things are.

He was doing a good pre-season at the Lorne two weeks ago. And let me tell you, it certainly wasn't in the Pier-to-Pub race. Can drink a bit the youngster, and he is a very big boy. I had a small chat with him and we both seemed fairly excited about the upcoming season. I actually asked him when Nick Smith will ever be fit, and he laughed. ;)

He certainly can!

Nearly cost him a position in the 2004 PF Vs Brisbane too!

Oh the hardships of a footy career ey? :thumbsu:

Ah well, you only live once, as long as it doesnt affect his footy.

As long as he keeps playing as he did last year we have a very good player for years to come. As some have said he could kick some more goals.

When he does kick for goal it seems to be a last second thought that he will only do after no other options present themselves, causing rushed kicks which tended to be points.

If he could work on lining the sticks up when he's around the 50 meter arc rather than always looking for the pass he would have a much better goal/point ratio.

Well said. If he could start slotting a couple of outside 50 goals on the run and be a bit more accountable (He'll never be fully accountable but just if his direct opponent is carving us up i.e Cooney Round 21 2005 he can just tighten up a little bit) I believe he can take the next step towards becoming one of the better midfielders in the comp.

yeh but guys like cooney require a tight tag and moloney, who like cooney, is also a match winner, should be allowed to move freely too.

Not trolling here, as iv already stated Beamer is my favourite player in the competition - but do u care to back that last comment up?

When has Beamer ever been the match winner???

not in that many games as such but he has the capabilities to be one. He stands up against big teams when others go missing (st kilda and brisbane spring to mind), he has a booming long kick which allows him to kick goals that most others couldn't. he can also find a way through packs when others can't.

when it comes to particular games, he was instrumental in melbournes comeback victory against the cats in round 20. he also scored 3 votes in melbournes demolition job vs essendon and very deservativly so.

he may not have ripped games apart off his own boot like a hird or buckley has but he certainly has the potential, wouldn't you agree?

Round 1 2005 vs Essendon - 3 brownlow votes. robbed in a game vs. kangas at manuka, 28 possies, and also was easily our best in thrashings against the saints in rd 18 and geelong in the final, or we wouldve been absolutely shat all over

Agree with that. In that victory vs the Cats he was the one shoving it down Robbo's throat.
He'll never be a superstar in the mould of a Hird or Buckley but may rise to as good or a tad better than say Simon Goodwin and if he was the equal to Goodwin I would be very happy.

Moloney will damage teams with his game, however I cannot ever see him winning a match off his game ...

I totally agree - he will never be a Hird/Bucks/Voss matchwinner, however he will definitly be a hard working Ricciuto/Hocking type on-baller who will play 150-200 games for the MFC and win a B&F or two.

I'm going to go down and watch one of ur training sessions in the next couple of weeks and see how beamer is going - all the best to him in 06.

Whats the latest with Brent Moloney - last i heard was he wasnt training with calf-soreness ...

can anyone give any updates ? is the big fellas back out there?

and can anyone verify a comment made earlier the TD said beamer's pre season was up there with the best he's ever seen in his time in the AFL.

didnt play in the intra club prac game in carrara last week. Club is keeping quiet on whether he is actually injured or was just ill. Not to sure about his form..

I over heard beamer talking to a club offical at the family day.. Beamer said he was as sick as a dog and couldnt get outa bed so I take it he did have a virus.. Best of luck to him this year :thumbsu:
