1990 saw the start of two young guns no Pies fans will forget in a hurry in Scotty Russell and Tony Francis. After watching youtube clips of Beams and Sidebottom i see a few similarities to Russell and Francis and am hopeing their careers go along a similar path, except for going to other clubs to finish their playing days. Sidebottom seems to have a real knack around the goals (10 in a granny aint bad) and could be a very handy link player between hb and hf ala Russell, and beams seems to be the tough in and under player ala Francis. While no one expects both these guys to have the impact that Russell and Francis did in their first year or kick 10 goals week to week, i like what i see and in a few years think our midfeild will be as strong as any team in the comp.

Both Russell and Francis were mature aged by the time they came over and had played senior footy in SA, so they were more ready to perform immediately.

Let's wait until they have played at least ONE game before we make our predictions. Derek doesn't get every selection right and he took Danny Stanley with pick 21 - eight picks before Dayne Beames was selected.

Jason McCartney who ran the academy said that we would be getting a good midfielder in Beames, but not a great one.

I did say that no one, and least of all me, expects these guys to have an immediate impact, just think looking at u18 level against players of the same age and body size we may have a couple of players to compliment pendles, thomas and co in the midfield. I also agree that it is drawing quite a long bow, just thought id throw it out there and see what people think.
