Notting, McDonald unhappy Lions
By Scott Gullan
October 05, 2006

THE mass player exodus from Brisbane Lions appears set to include two more premiership players, with ruckman Beau McDonald and defender Tim Notting looking elsewhere.

On the eve of trade week, the future of almost a third of the Lions' list remains clouded as the club battles major salary cap issues.

McDonald and Notting are out of contract and considering their futures after being offered only one-year deals.

Rival clubs are already circling, with McDonald, who played eight games this year after a long injury layoff, creating interest at Adelaide and St Kilda.

Notting, a dual premiership player, is coming off one of his best years at centre half-back.

With his girlfriend expected to give birth next week, he is looking for security and is believed to be shocked by the Lions' offer.

Given his flexibility and big-game experience, Notting, 27, would fit into any side, with Melbourne and Sydney understood to be on the radar.

There are question marks on more than a dozen Lions. The situation will become clearer in the next 24 hours.

Mal Michael and Michael Voss are expected to announce their intentions by the end of the week.

Many believe Michael will retire given he has been unable to come to an agreement with coach Leigh Matthews on a reduced training program.

Triple premiership players to have already departed include defender Justin Leppitsch (retired) and Clark Keating (sacked). Jason Akermanis has stated he wants to play with Western Bulldogs next year.

Brad Scott has retired and Daniel Bradshaw is seriously considering a move back to Victoria because the Lions cannot meet his financial demands.

Ashley McGrath is out of contract and wants a return home to Fremantle. Other disgruntled players include Richard Hadlee, Matthew Moody and Scott Harding.

Far too injury prone for my liking.

The Lions are right to offer him a one year deal and if were to offer a longer deal I'd be a bit concerned.
