Ben Cousins

Seems a nice place to start, who hasn't been talking about him in the last 24 months?

Is the culture that bad over there in Perth?

If anyone wants to listen to a biast radio, hook yourselves up to the 6PR stream, Jakovich just claimed that West Coast were the "cleanest club in the competition".

How he works that out is beyond me.

Takes a bit of heat off us with McLean's freewheeling around Europe also.

Good to see that ex-players are still involved with their club, even if it is just doing drugs with the rest of them.

Only explanation as to why he would say that.

From being forced to listen to 6PR once when we played over there, I do believe they would be biased enough to suggest that the eagles are the cleanest team in the competition. Sorry, jacko, but that's just bullshit.

Drugs is big problem in a society, and AFL players make up our society so there is always gona b a small minority of players on drugs. 28 players have returned a positive test in the last 2 years, so you wud think at least once club has 1 player with a drug problem.

WC drug problem is just a lot more public than other teams. Still its a big issue in the AFL, i believe it shud be a 2 strike policy. But seing as the AFL Players Association agreed to the 3 strikes it seing them agree to a 2 strikes policy.

I just think he was saying they've cleaned house and are extra vigilant is all. Would make sense knowing we are more under the spotlight of media attention than any other team.
If a Government cleans out a corrupt official, does that make them a clean Government?

Its a culture problem, not a player problem.

Call me naive but...

It shits me how it's Ben Cousins. Say, for arguments sake, we put someone like Lynden Dunn in his shoes. EXACT same circumstances, ran from a booze bus, had an ice addiction, went to the US and then got arrested. Would anyone honestly care as much as they do? Probably not for obvious reasons, one namely because he'd be sacked straight away you'd think.

It's just how Mick Malthouse said. When those three young players were out past curfew they got suspended for a week. When Ben Johnson and Chris Tarrant kicked the stuffing out of someone, they got a slap on the wrist, didn't miss a game.

Ah yes it is true, some are more equal than others...Mmmm I love animal farm

Question is though did Cousins' place in Perth as the pin up boy of the sport lead to his eventual downfall?

I doubt Dunn if placed in the same situation would have fallen by the wayside as much as Benny has.

Well let's be honest. In Australia, aside from sportsmen we've got nothing to idolise. Our biggest celebrities are sporting gods. In the States, UK, other places around the world drugs find and catch up with musicians and movie stars and so on. Massive generalisation I know.

Over in Perth you get the impression that it's just so isolated and all they've got to do there is get pissed and stoned. He's godlike over there...Whether that's because there is a lack of anything to compare with remains to be seen

Have the Dees ruled out drafting Cousins should he nominate next year?

Thank you. You seem to be one of a very small group of Melbourne based people who think... lets just say outside the box. Outside of the box the media sets for everyone.

Who here actually believes players at West Coast are the only ones in the competition? If you do, you're an absolute numbskull. West Coast's players are the only ones which have been publicised through the media.

Besides, there are only two players who have admitted to it, and have evidence saying they took drugs. Obviously Ben Cousins, but also Daniel Kerr who is said to be (and I believe this, because he is no idiot) off them now.

So just do yourselves a favour and look at your own club, the circumstances and what information you are being presented with - remember, the media is one of many businesses which main purpose is to get people to believe stereotypes. So don't say all of West Coast are drug addicts and don't generalise them because Ben Cousin took drugs. I can bet my life that at least one player in every club is taking illicit drugs, the media just doesn't tell them. People believe what they are told, if they are not told, they don't know.

Just think, there are more percentage of white people committing crimes than there are of black people committing crimes - it is a proven fact. Yet many people don't know that because it is brushed under the rug, but when a black person commits a crime, it is shown on the News. so don't judge us, because you don't know the facts!

Yes it is obvious that West Coast is not the only club with a problem. I have in fact been asked for drugs of players from more than one Melbourne based club. I have also heard of other players who are right into and may even have an addiction to a similar level of ben cousins. As you said maditaliano it would be naive to think that the problem is restricted to the eagles.

We need someone to replace trapper, and Cousins is that player and more. Sure If he gets busted again it will create some negative publicity for our club, but bad publicity is better than no publicity which is what we received this year and for the last decade. Melbourne's problem is not that it suffers from a bad image, but that it has no image at all. We have turned into a 'nothing' club.
For what it is worth Ben Cousins is the most marketable player in the AFL and despite his off-field discretions I think he could add some serious marketing cache to our club.

Thats the dumbest thing I have read on bigfooty in a long time, and thats saying something.

How is what he said dumb? Make perfecty sense to me. melbourne really lack the marquee players to promote our club. We don't have a Judd or a Hird or a Riewoldt ect. What ben would do would add interest to what in my opinion is a pretty bland club.

You know you're up shit creek when fans start to want an ice addict at the club because he will generate publicity.

The only thing that will get more supporters of this club to sign up as members, is by winning games. Simple as that.

We aren't in the business of trying get the most press coverage by recruiting arrogant drug addicts. We are in the business of winning flags. Also by playing good footy we can have marquee players that promote the club, we might not have a top line star like Brown, Judd or Reiwoldt, but if we play good footy McLean and Davey can be our Bartel and Ablett. The bottom line is that recruiting Ben Cousins will not help us win a flag.

As much as I would loathe to get him because of his off field behaviour...he could seriously help our list IF you look at the player he is, not the person he is. That said, I am probably leaning towards not giving him a chance because I don't think the players would be too happy if we got him. It's always a risk recruiting someone with known off field issues and I don't think that's a risk Bails will take.

What Dean Bailey cant do is pick up Ben Cousins:eek:, beacuse he got rid of Trapper:p for similair reason (booze, betting etc). He did not want trapper:p to lead the young fellas astray. Then to pick up cousins:eek: would contredict himself.
I personally would not mind him though!
