Last year at the Collingwood v Bulldogs match (where us bulldogs got spanked) several pies supporters around me were saying how much of a hack Ben Johnson is and basically that he shouldn't be in the team let alone be allowed near the ball...

Obviously he has improved quite a bit this year...just wondering what the pies supporters think of him now?

Obviously those Pies supporters have little knowledge of Ben Johnson. Granted, he was lacking in quite a few areas when he started at Collingwood, but in the last two years (especially) he has really come on, particularly this year.

Johnno might be a chance for the Copeland this year.

3 years ago, I made the bold, unfounded, and possibly influenced by alcohol claim that Josh Fraser was going to captain Collingwood when Bucks was done, mark my words, no correspondence will be entered into.

Depending on how far away that is, I wouldn't be surprised if I'm proven wrong and it's Johnson. He shows tremendous leadership, and since about mid-last year you can SEE the difference in the way the backline treat him -- people like Presti and Clement actually seem to respect him as a 'leader', which is quite amazing to see. Great footy head on his shoulders, a very mature player -- obviously disposal was a big problem at first but now, I think, he's as good as anyone.

Absolutely indispensable to the side at the moment.

(Note that, having said this, he'll probably be traded at the end of the year and I'll look like a knob)

Prior to the 2002 Final in Adelaide Johnson was a fringe player who was prone to making many mistakes. In that game he made some ripper blunders which could have cost us the game. MM showed faith in him and kept him on the ground which proved a great move as Ben made a super tackle to save a goal.

I think this helped his confidence by proving he could do the hard things under pressure. His confidence has grown since then and it shows in his willingness to get to a contest and do what has to be done.

He will be one of the leadership group in years to come.

Can't remember Johnson ever playing a bad game against Port. I could be wrong of course.

Actually I can't remember any of your players playing a really poor game against us in the last 4 years. This tradition has to stop sometime - I hope!

Ben is a good hard runner, a great trier and has a good footy brain. His kicking can let him down. I look at him as a fast Paul Licuria. Like Lica he has improved his skills. He still has to improve his kicking iof he wants to be a top lebvel midfielder.

Peot from Port, IIRC Ben had an ordinary night in the 2002QF and gave away a free kick in front of goal at a ball up. He later made a goal and probably game saving tackle on Burgoyne in the goal square. To me that summed him up.

Since then he has become a safer and better footballer and a genuine midfield option. Right now I'd put him behind Buckley and Burns and with Licuria in our midfield although he doesn't play as a midfielder all the time as the others do.

I have always liked Him and Thought he was good but this year h's gone up a few cogs in my book and im sure also in a lot of footy experts books too!

He holds our defence togetehr along with clement.

Johnno has really come on recently.

However I think the only thing will stop him from having an official leadership role are his off field indiscretions

He's continued to be a shining light in an otherwise dreary start. Some say he turns the ball over to much but I think he is one of the only players with some go forward at the moment. Some of our midfielders turn it over by foot mre than Johnno. The mans a gun.

Ben has gotten the most out of himself because from day one he has done everything possible to be a league footballer.

Good chance for the Copeland.
