Considering we didn't even look at trading for a ruckman this week, could we pull a rabbit out of a hat and Pick up McEvoy at 2.

Recruiting ruckmen in the draft is a dark art. It is not in the tiny bit suprising when someone like Cox stars off a rookie list.

18 year old ruckmen are at hugely different points in their development.

What history does tell us though is that over-spending on them does not pay dividends.

Take one between 1-3 if he is a standout star (Ottens, Fraser, White, Leunberger, Kreuzer). But 'forcing' a pick in the 10-30 range on a 2nd-tier candidate does not return better results than a rookie selection.

Someone like Andrew Renton or Dawson Simpson very late could easily go past McEvoy in 2-3 years.

Ruckmen are tough. You really can't go on exposed form NOW. You need to really be imagining where they will get to in 4 years. Bit like trying to call a 400m race (?) when everyone starts on the stagger on the bend. You have to wait to see them all straighten up before you can tell who is in front.

Ruckmen (and key position players) generally aren't worth the pick if it is between 5 (depending on the strength of the draft) and pick 30.

The odds of that 5-30 guy (eg Hughes, Schulz, Reiwoldt) is almost exactly the same as the 30-rookie guys (Thursfield, McGuane, Simmonds).

You getter better bang for your buck taking inside midfielders in that range (over time).

Weaver does that mean would you be against us picking up a ruckman with pick 18 if one was available?

For example say Bellchambers, McEvoy, Grimes, S.Selwood were available at pick 18 who would be your preferred option?

Let me just say my knowledge of potential draftees is totally based on the readong of threads on the drafts and trading board from yourself and the guys that do the Phantom Draft. So I just picked 4 names out for the question.

I would go for the midfielder like Selwood or Grimes. It is just about playing the percentages. You draft a utility at 18 and you have 15 spots in the team every week to play him. You draft a ruckman and you have 2.

With such a strong ruck class this year the guys taken on the rookie lists this year will be close to the 30-40 picks of previous years. Supply and demand will drive their price down.

Cheers Weaver.

I honestly reckon that Patto will be alright for us in a few years time, he is half decent around the ground for a ruckman and he started winning a few ruck contests towards the end of the year.
