Quinlan did have the tendency of dishing out some cheap shots as commentator - I remember when he was regularly and petulantly ridiculing Brisbane player Laurence Schache in an early 1991 match, who went on to win the club's goalkicking that season.

Schache was a maligned player in his brief career. I remember in one of his first AFL games some of the Channel 7 commentators harshly bagged him and wondered how he was able to be playing AFL football. It was duly noted how inane the criticism looked after he won the Brisbane goalkicking that season - he certainly wasn't the worst player going around.

RIP

I think Bernie Quinlan was the commentator who described him as the worst footballer ever.A bit harsh when it was only his 1st game.

Didn't Schache kick about 25 goals in a country league game before he was drafted ?

Yeah, I thought it was Quinlan and/or Ian Robertson who were bagging Schache but wasn't 100% sure.

In a way it was poetic that Quinlan went on to coach Fitzroy when they were a rabble in 1995. Considering their leading goal kicker that season was Chris Johnson with 25, I wonder whether Bernie felt Schache wasn't such a bad player after all.

As for the 25 goals, I believe he kicked that for the Essendon Under 19s in 1985 against Sydney.
