Melbo

Not sure why people are putting Boyd ahead of Cross. Cross was b&f in 2008, 2nd in 2009-10. Me and the coaches appear to be the only ones who notice how good he is.

A couple of them are just the players whose names i know TBH.

Adelaide has the least star power (based on 5 players). The saints have the most, for mine.

I would agree with you regarding Saint Kilda. Their first 6-8 players are very very good. Unfortunately their last 2-3 tend to let them down.

I'd also say that Essendon or Brisbane have the least.

Essendon, perhaps, but Brisbane with Black, Brown, Fev, Power, and Rich is pretty awesome as far as 5 players go.

Top 5 slowest players in the AFL? maybe

I can't believe people are putting Higgins in the best 5 dogs players. He has not once been our best player in a single match. Cross is far superior. Even Ward has done more.

The ageing Cats are hard to assess. I would expect things to change in view of recent form and injuries. All things being equal however:

1. Bartel
2. Chapman
3. Selwood
4. Enright
5. Scarlett

Scarlett slowed noticeably in 2010, suffering a few niggles. Perhaps SJ in for him. Kelly and Varcoe darkhorses.

Suffered a few niggles is correct, I don't think otherwise he slowed at all. When fit, and when our idiot coach played him at fullback, was still as good as ever.

1. Chapman
2. Enright
3. Scarlett
4. Johnson
5. Bartel

Scarlett was our best and most valuable player up until 2008 (from about 2003). In 2009 he was still the premier fullback in the comp (& AA), though IMO he wasn't quite as commanding as previously. As for last year, though the injury niggles undoubtedly had something to do with it, it became fairly apparent that his best was behind him. Not as good as ever IMO.

Perhaps a bit harsh on Selwood? I don't fawn over him either, having a few gripes about his disposal etc, but going into this year I'd be surprised if he didn't make his way into the top 5, ahead of an older compatriot...

1. Riewoldt
2. Deledio
3. Newman

the next 2 would come from...
Foley, moore, cotchin, martin, Jackson

Cotchin has the biggest upside of those 5, but hasn't got there yet. Martin by the end of the year should be in the top 5. Foley at his best is in our top5 easily. Jackson and Moore are pretty consistent.

We'll have to wait and see. I base it on two telling contributions last year. One was in Round 7 (I think) against Sydney, when Scarlett returned from injury against Bradshaw, who was the in-form forward of the competition. Scarlett kept him to 2 possessions and 1 goal. Murdered him.

The second was in the Qualifying Final against St.Kilda. Kosi undoubtedly had the better of him in the first quarter, but only kicked one goal for his efforts. After that, he did not touch the ball once. None of our other defenders are capable of performances like that. And that's pretty recent form.

He could slide for certain, but I haven't seen evidence yet. Just praying that Scott doesn't want our best full-back to become a half-back flanker like the last moron did.

Selwood was a tough one, but you can't fit everyone in. Good on him for winnign the best and fairest, but no way did he have a better year than Ablett.

I guess he's certainly still capable of performing to that level (or very near it), as you've illustrated, but now when you look at him each week do you honestly expect him to play that well as a matter of course? Granted injuries and being played out of position are factors outside his control, but consistency and reliability constitute part of a player's worth.

Anyway, happy for you to bring this post to my attention in 3 months time!

Re selwood - true, you can't fit everyone in. I wouldn't previously have had him in my top 5, but with Ablett's departure and another year into the legs of the older brigade, I predict him to be up there.

Some strange selections - Mackie, Betts, Morton, Nahas, NicNat all stand out. From a Bulldogs perspective i'm a bit flabbergasted that Lake isn't in there, Gia and Higgins definitely shouldn't be
