Alot of people are calling for us to go for the best available talent with our first pick especially. I tend to a agree to certain extent. However it seems to me that we are overlooking Patrick Ryder, imo (and i have not seen him play) he is head and shoulders above the rest! Here is a player that you could almost certainly put in the ruck and expect to win the position 9/10 times. There is a query over his height but i reckon he will grow that extra 3-4 cm's given his age (03/88). If not and we find that he cant ruck (which is highly unlikely imo) chuck him down back, with his natural aboriginal skill and flare he would be an awesome pick up at chb as well.

Adam Goodes all over for mine. A challenging idea since most people have pencilled in mids with our first 2 picks, but i reckon this kid could be the best available at pick 2.

i wouldnt go best available. u guys need mids. i would take ellis or hurn. obvioulsy murphy if he is still around. dont take ryder, u might as well take another (even though he is alot better) cloke.

Any player taken in the 3rd round is a gamble. And as far as i'm concerned, all clokes were a good buy for a 3rd round f/s pick. I'm so sick of this cloke bashing.

The rumour we're going to be taking Xavier Ellis and Dale Thomas is gathering more momentum than a runnaway freight train.

Presuming we thhink they're best available, then so be it. As I've said all along, so long as our recruiters aren't blinded by our supposed needs, then so be it!

You do realise Travis Cloke was 13 when we picked up Jason Cloke right?
no i didnt, but i remember that when we drafted cloke a stack of people were saying we only drafted him to get his brothers and they were all saying that the youngest cloke would be the best. I think at the age of 13 alot of recruiters would be able to tell if someone is goingto be gun! soccer clubs have been doing it for years, harry kewell being a prime example

The big soccer clubs bring them through there own feeder club from the age of 12. And for every hit there are 20 or so misses.

I wouldn't mind seeing us pick up Xavier ellis or Kennedy with our first pick..

But i also would like to see beau muston in a collingwood jumper.. oubt he will though we don't need another gamble with our first round pick.

Yeah but once in a while there is a kid you know will be good. It doesnt cost much to keep these kids on the 'payroll', they can afford to be wasteful

The day's of having your own two's and a big list with the likes of a Tuck spending years in the two's developing are long gone.

With the small list and no FULL reserves team there is no room for developments.

Whoever you put on your list must make the grade in the shortest time possible otherwise you are putting your 'depth' in a holding pattern.

Selections performing at an above average standard in a short space of time mean's you can cope with injuries (have a drip feed of replacements) and you can be competitive over a long period.

Need three groups of 7 to 9 players.

> 200

around 150

around 100

Youngsters.

If the majority of your youngsters are gone before 50 games and your old times drop off the end of the conveyor belt then you will be stretched for depth and talent if injury hits.

Look at the profile of Brisabane when it was winning GFs.

about 8 old timers
6 or 7 150 gamers (or approaching).
6 or 7 100 gamers (or approaching).

and a handful of youngsters as spackfilla during the season.

there simply is not the time to give to projects or slow developers.
