hey guys i was just wondering who you thought has been your best first year player, considering the number of players that you recruited in last years draft. i've watched a few of your games and would have to say it is between hill suban and broughton, thoughts?

Agreed, between those 3 for best first year players all representing important aspects that we needed as a team. With the injuries that Fremantle have had for the year, the development of these players in this year will provide excellent rewards in future.

I am very much looking forward to a full pre season for all of them and an exciting 2010. Biggest (and most pleasant) surprise for 2009 would have to be the elevation of Broughton and his filling the great hole that was left when Hayden broke his leg.

gotta be broughton

hilly and suban have had their moments, i would put it in this order for our young first year players

Broughton
hill
suban
ballantyne
deboer
pearce
clarke
ruffles
vanberlo
walters
pratt

thats 11 players, i think atleast 7 will become genuinely good afl footballers, that is an outstanding effort from the club

Broughton has been slightly better than Hill and Suban, who you could raffle for 2nd best. De Boer would be next ahead of Clancee and Frodo - both whom could have been higher with more games played. Im most excited by Clarke though, reckon he will be an A grade player within 4/5 years.

Can you tell im loving the kids?

As has been discussed before, the award for the best Freo first year player ( The Beacon ? ), is a bit of a poison chalice.

I think we should give it to Ruffles, as he will already miss half of next season with the knee injury. Why stuff up Hill, Suban, Broughton for the 2010 season !!!!.

Seriously I am stoked with our first year players and agree that Broughton has his head just in front. Would like to see more love for De Boer, I didn't know the Monts produced such gritty players.

It would of been nice to see hill win, but 1st broughton, 2nd hill, close 3rd for suban with balla's some where in the mix!

Any chance we can just give a belated Beacon award to Adam Campbell this year instead?

Personally I wouldn't want to mess with Ruffles while he's undertaking rehab...

Broughton for me ...he has the least upside of all of them but that may well be because he is already playing at a very high level.

It really looks like we have nailed this draft (well so far so good) ...this makes up a little for some of the clown acts we managed in the Collard and Stribling years.

I really just want us to go to the draft again another 4 in the ND and another 3 or 4 prospects in the rookie list will do me finesome.

It's not really fair to compare Broughton and Balla who were already playing WAFL footy at a very high standard for a few years to Hill and Suban who pretty much just came through the 18's and Colts. I know Hilly was playing WAFL toward the end of last year (and burning it up) but he was only playing Colts at the start of the year.
No doubt Broughton has had the most solid year of all the first year guys but I rate Hills year as outstanding considering his physical stature. He's stood up to everything and played several excellent games, been serviceable in most others.
Suban took a little longer to show his stuff (although the class was evident from the get go) but is really coming home with a wet sail whereas Hilly is looking tired.
DeBoer has exceeded expectations by miles for mine. A real genuine grunt player. His hard ball gets are inspirational. The get and give to Pav last week at the City end a prime example.
I think Ruffles showed amazing courage and real class in his limited outings and I was really upset when he went down. Definite future best 22.
Pearce looks a natural, poised and composed. Clinical around goal!
Clarke is a good competitor and will probably be a decent 2'nd ruck next year with another pre=season. Handy around goal too with his good marking skills.
Walters is the definition of classy. High hopes there.
I can't go past Hill. I love him to bits (in a paternal, fatherly, totally non ghey way) So happy we picked him. Just by a whisker from Broughton/Suban with DeBoer the next best.

How good it is to actually have to think about this. All this years debutants have shown promise and been exposed to a fait bit of footy already. When you have Palmer, Crowley and Johnson to come back into the side, it looks like mid-tier players such as Peake, Gilmore and Drum just don't have a career at Freo anymore, due to the fact that the majority of first timers deserve to keep their spot next year.

Anyways the top 5 for me are
1. Suban : played all year and rarely had a quiet game, if at all
2. Broughton : Same as Suban, very hard to separate the 2
3.Hill : Was meant to be a development project but gave so much more for a skinny kid
4. Ballytyne: only played a handful of games and still makes the list picking him at 21 in the draft seems worthwhile and smart in hindsight. White Wizard
5. Deboer: Future hard nosed player. Loves the rough stuff and hard contest.

C'mon 2010 !!

Mine's a toss up between suban & hill.. i saw suban play last year in melb for nth ballarat & he's a great player then seeing him play for us this year has been great, he's an exciting little player

then hill coz of pretty much the same reason, he brings excitement to the game & seems to not be afraid of anything

next year i'd love to see ruffles back & more of balla since he was injuried for quite a bit of the start of the season :)

Greg Broughton looks disturbingly like Roger Hayden on the field now. Never beaten one on one and cool headed with the ball on the last line. Put the ball in his hands and things will happen. Awesomely super good things, at that. I can't go past him for best first year player, despite the hot competition.

Remember when people were telling us not to expect anything out of Stephen Hill for a good 2-3 years? With the benefit of hindsight, I propose that we label said people as morons now and forever more.

I'd have to agree with you there - Those extra couple of years Broughton has on the younger fellas really shows in his composure under pressure, but still a standout.

I was expecting both Hill and Suban to have good seasons and both have surpassed expectations, but i have been really impressed with De Boer off the rookie list - i reckon he's the new Josh Carr for niggle but is harder at it and a decent overhead mark.

1. Broughton
2. Suban
3. Hill
4. DeBoer
5. Frodo

Put Clancee in as #6 and we have a winner.

It's got to be Broughton by a mile (though as said he has the advantage of being a couple of years older than the rest). Hill next and then Suban. Those saying Suban surprise me. I guess they're going on attitude and 'potential. Which brings me to this ...

On 'potential' I'd actually pick Suban. He looks like he's going to be a complete package (good in tight, good disposal, hard nut, mentally strong, leadership qualities, and a quickish player too who can run the lines). Hill has got tones of upside too of course.

... but as said, strictly on the year as a whole, it's got to be Broughton.
