I was watch before the bounce tonight and they had a question from last week: "who was the best indigenous player to play the game?". The poll came back and Eddie betts with the winner with 44%. A bit lopsided! Maybe it was only Carlton supporters voting! ( well done boys )

But got me thinking who is the best indigenous player to play with Carlton!

I have ver limited knowledge on this!

We do have a few good indigenous players running around at the moment with Betts, Garlett, walker and with Yarren has the potential to become one of the best to play the game!

Greg Williams had indigenous blood in him. Quite possible the best player i have ever seen to pull on a Carlton jumper. :thumbsu:
Actually, I don't think he does. I'm sure he's been asked and said no.

Syd's our best. Turned up at an AGM a few years ago. Bit of a thrill that.

Ummmm.......I think it was Chris Lewis' view that Greg Williams was not of indigenous decent......a rather unsavoury event that somewhat tarnished the career of a champion of our club. They were different times, but there is no excuse if Williams did say what Lewis claimed he said, and the apology was a bit lacking in sincerity too

I was once in an indigenous person can I claim it???

But no, I'm a syd jackson man 100%

also off topic my most epic carlton player is ted hopkins! rip vin waite too :(

(wasnt the first indigenous player at the top level)

Norm McDonald played in a few flags with the Bombers in the late 40's (wearing No.4)and Pastor Doug Nicholls was a gun player for Fitzroy. The latter was rejected by Carlton as our trainers infamously refused to rub him down.

Greg Williams' olive complexion is apparentaly due to him having Spanish background somewhere in the family tree.

From memory, Carlton has had the following indigenous players represent our great club.

1. Syd Jackson
2. Justin Murphy
3. Eddie Betts
4. Andrew Walker
5. Chris Yarran
6. Jeff Garlett
7. Joey Anderson
8. Cory McGrath
9. Troy Bond
10. Sean Charles
11. Rod Waddell

Other listed players were;

Clinton Benjamin
Ezra Bray
Alan Thorpe
Willie Pepper (he went to Uni High with me) - he played U/19's only around 1984-85

I would imagine that there would be some others that l have missed.

Syd hands down.

Walker may overtake him if he can stay on the park.

Williams wasn't indigenous, he had some spanish blood in him I think.

Joe Johnson
played in 2 flags for Fitzroy in 1904/5 and later went on to be the player/coach of Bruswick in the VFA and lead them to their first premiership in 1909.

I think that Walker might end up being the replacement for Syd. Although I think that Yazz might also go close as well :)
