I for one have never had a crash on XP, or with the 2000 and NT workstations at my college, but I had plenty on 95 and 98.

Of course there are alternatives to Windows. UNIX, Linux, *BSD, Mac OS, OS/2, RISC OS (aka Acorn), (recently revived, soon to be released) Amiga OS4, MorphOS...
 
I'm currently running MacOS 10.2 (Jaguar) and can honestly say that it is the best platform that I have ever had the pleasure of using.

Having said that, MacOS 10.3 (Panther) is soon the be released - which will be optimized for by 64bit 1.6GHz G5 - now that will be special!

I'm not even going to enter into the Windows Vs MacOS debate - as far as I'm concerned there is no denying that MacOS is better, and generally those that argue against MacOS have never really used it.

'Yet' being the operative word...

How bad is an operating system whereby it's users expect it to crash? Not only do they expect it to crash, but they accept it as normal.

This thread is stupid for:
1. It only lists MS operating systems, which of course you can tell by reading the other posts, Isn't the only company that makes OS
2. It's in the wrong section.
3. The thread IMO was started because of the arguments that would almost certainly appear in it.

The OS you use shouldn't be chosen for how it looks or if it has a reputation for crashing or not , The idea is to get something that suits what you want to do with your computer. If your buying a computer to play old dos games ("abandonware") there is no point in using XP because you'll run into problems, it comes down to personal choice and no single person or collective group can say which is the best. The same goes for the Athlon/Intel argument it's stupid, use what you want. Live and let die.

As for my choice? I think all Windows OS suck and Bill Gates is a money hungry bastard, I use XP pro and I'm proud to say I didn't spend a single cent on it because it's crap. The only OS that will be truly great is the one you make yourself and until you do that whatever is available and usable will do. If you don't like Windows but can't use/get anything else try a shell like LiteStep. Of course LiteStep is a pretty unstable program, most open source free developed apps are but what can you do hey? Get yourself LiteStep or something along the lines, learn how to make/code the themes make your own just the way you'd like it and there you go.
Just to note as far as I know LiteStep only works for Windows, I wouldn't have a clue what there is for any other OS but I'm sure there's something similar.
 
XP keep crashing on me :mad: I've had to reformat a few times because of XP. Since moving to Windows 2000 Pro 4 months ago, i've never had a problem. Best MS O/S out there IMO.

Red Hat Linux is also good. Proberly better than Windows!

Poor little anti -windows sheep. Actually, there seems to be quite a few people on these boards that wouldn't use windows just because it is windows. Have any of you used it? As for the Linux users, so long as you're not those people that use it for the same reason as above, or because you think you are all '1337':rolleyes:. I've used most OS's:

- MacOSX - yes, its very pretty, but is a bit slow
- Linux - I don't use my computer for the purposes that Linux was built, so I don't find it as good as Windows XP
- XP - Sometimes has its issues, but it seems to kill everything else in terms of support etc.

Just my 2c.

For someone who has a PC (I refuse to buy into Mac v PC again at this point) and who is not very technically literate the best choice of OSes are the various flavours of Windows. Not because they are the best systems, but because they are simple to manage and the majority of software out there for PCs is Windows based.

FWIW I tend to say that Windows 2000 is probably the best of the Microsoft Windows OSes so far - its had a bit more time than XP to settle down.

1. Windows 2000
2. Windows XP
3. Windows 98 SE
4. Windows NT 4
5. Windows 95
6. Windows ME

Before the anti-MS legion attack me, I am familiar with Linux, I run it myself at home on my second machine and for certain tasks it way outperforms Windows. However Linux is not ready to be the primary operating system for home or office workstations. It would be better to compare Linux with Windows 2000/3 Server than the desktop variant at this point.

I don't have much exposure to other Unix variants on PCs, although I believe the underlying OS for OSX is a Mac variant of BSD.

I agree.

Anyway I dont know why there are people that are Anti Windows. Whats wrong with it? Its great and in my opinion better then Linux and Mac. XP looks very good and has more "stuff" then the other versions.
 
Of the windows flavours, I probably like XP the most - provided all the useless eye-candy is turned off. Has support for plenty of devices, though a little bloated. 2k is the most solid, and NT is good too, if ancient. I've never owned a machine that has had 95/98/Me installed, and with good reason.

I've dabbled briefly with Linux (Red Hat 8.0?) and although it was an interesting learning experience, I don't think I could use it as my day-in day-out OS of choice - too much work!!

My weapon of choice is Mac OS X. As a previous poster mentioned, it feels a little sluggish at first - but I like it.
 
Out of this MS lot, XP slightly ahead of 98 SE, which is miles above 98.

ME was just a glorified BETA they decided to release for more $$$. Win95 is better than it.

Red Hat is ok, apparently Caldera is better, but the thing dosen't install on my machine, so it can get ****ed.
