Seeing there was a story about Sandringham's Nick Sautner in today's Herald Sun got me thinking-who's the best player to have never played in the VFL/AFL.

Here's my selections:

1. Barrie Robran (North Adelaide-SANFL)
2. Stephen Michael (South Fremantle-WAFL)
3. Garry McIntosh (Norwood-SANFL)
4. Michael Aish (Norwood-SANFL)
5. John Cahill (Port Adelaide-SANFL)
6. Nick Sautner (Sandringham-VFL)
7. Bill Swan (Port Melb/Will'town-VFL)
8. Bruce Light (Port Adelaide-SANFL)
9. Paul Bagshaw (Sturt-SANFL)
10. John Todd (South Fremantle-WAFL)

Pretty hard to argue with some of those

My choices

1. Barrie Robran (North Adelaide-SANFL)
2. Stephen Michael (South Fremantle-WAFL)
3. Garry McIntosh (Norwood-SANFL)
4. Michael Aish (Norwood-SANFL)
5. John Cahill (Port Adelaide-SANFL)
6. Frosty Miller (Dandenong - VFA)
7. Kevin "Mulga" Malseed (Heywood WBFL)
9. Lindsay Head (West Torrens - SANFL)
10. John Todd (South Fremantle-WAFL)

Robran was the best though

Former Advertiser journalist Geoff Kingston best summed up Barrie Robran this way: "Barrie Robran was a man in whom nature succeeded". The late Mike Patterson said "Barrie can match any Victorian in any phase. I've seen him do things that other players over there are unable to accomplish."

That's how good Barrie Robran was.

Lucky enough to see him play was enough evidence of his talent

Patterson was a good judge .......must have been due to his nickmane ;)

You're probably rating Light and Bagshaw a little too much to include them there. Ken Farmer probably should be in the top 3. Other South Australians who would be contenders would be Ken Eustice, Geof Motley, Bob Quinn, Peter Carey, Peter Darley, and Bob Hank.
