Best team seen

OK so the board is pretty dead and I'm delaying doing stuff so here's a team of the best Melbourne players I've seen. I'm not really taking into account longevity (I wanted to pick Brock) just the best players, chosen from the time I started supporting the club in 1988.

B: Rivers Wight Whelan
HB: Yze Lyon B Lovett
C: Tingay G Lovett Johnstone
HF: Bruce Schwarz Davey
F: Farmer Neitz Jakovich
R: Stynes McLean Viney
INT: Hughes/Robbo Woewodin S Febey White
Coach: N Balme

Does Robbo deserve a spot ahead of Jakovich? Absolutely but I don't care Jako was like an even more crazy version of Garry Ablett, he was the biggest waste of talent I've seen but I still want him on my team.
Tell me who I've forgotten or who deserves a spot and who doesn't or if you are older than me or have a better memory, (I can't for the life of me remember Greg Healy although I know he was captain from 88-90) who have you seen who would make this team.

Do you prefer Balme as a coach over ND?

Well it was an exciting time, I was young and he was good enough to have a chat to me after the Bulldogs final in 94 so I like the guy. He was unlucky with injuries at the end, he was All Aussie coach in 94. Northey was not much more than a motivational speaker really and well ND is my scapegoat. If a few people think ND is better I'll change it. Any other suggestions?

I'd have Leoncelli in there cause he was my favourite player ESPECIALLY after kicking that goal against the Crows...But it's your team so I don't wanna fiddle with it.

Mind you Ben Beams was pretty good too:p

Nah I made it to be moulded by the board, but having said that you have to nominate someone to be dropped for him which I think would be tough.

B: D Hughes Wight A Johnson
HB: Yze T Campbell B Lovett
C: Tingay G Lovett Johnstone
HF: Lyon Schwarz Bruce
F: Farmer Neitz Jakovich
R: Stynes Newport Viney
INT: Bennett Woewodin S Febey White Ricky Jackson
Coach: J Northey

This wold kick some arse. Northey was a good coach. I think Campbell would be better CHB than carrol and I remember newport being quite a Ball magnet. And who can forget Ricky Jackson, he deserves aa spot just for kicking the sealer against carlton in the 88 final.

Campbell, Hughes, Johnson, Newport and Bennett! There's some 80's flavour. Seems your Melbourne experience goes back further than mine which leads me to ask, where is Flower????

Since 86. Missed him and forgot him. I've sort have started 90's as that seemed easier. Can't remember all the eighties players.

It is funny how when you look back, you suddenly remember plays you haven't thought about for ages.

89 Grinter smashing blokes left right and centre. I was looking at my old scrap book where he got 9 weeks for breaking Wallaces jaw. I might get the old scrapbook and dig out some interesting stats.

I almost had Grinter in instead of Whelan just to give the opposition a scare but Wheels is the best shut down small defender we've had in my time IMO. I'll get back to you on your other choices but I don't think I could drop Rivers and Brock. I'm hoping some old timers have a look at this thread so I can chuck Flower in there. plenty of room for TJ somewhere else.

B: Whelan, Hughes, Wight
HB: Febey, Neitz, Yze
C: Tingay, Woewodin, Johstone
HF: Robertson, Schwarz, Davey
FF: Farmer, Lyon, Jakovich
Foll: Stynes, Viney, Healy
Int: White, Bruce, G.Lovett, Jackson

Whilst its a bit silly having a our best goalkicker at CHB, in his younger days he was excellent in that position, and with Lyon, Schwarz, Jakovich and Robbo in the forward line, i think you can afford to have him down back.

Haven;t thought about this too much. Much younger team than lots of you guys as my first footy game was in 1995 and I was 5 at the time

B: Whelan Carroll S.Febey
HB: Rivers Ingerson Yze
C: Johnstone Viney G.Lovett
HF: Davey Schwarz Robertson
FF: Lyon Neitz Farmer
R: Stynes Woewodin McDonald
Int: McLean Leoncelli White Bruce
Coach: Danniher

This is roughly from the 1993-2006 timeframe...

B. S.Febey Wight Smith (Shaun)
HB. Yze Ingerson Rivers
C. Johnstone Woewodin Tingay
HF. Lyon Schwarz Davey
F. Farmer Neitz Jakovich
R. Stynes McLean Viney

Int. White, Bruce, B.Lovett, G.Lovett

It may just have been me but I remember Shaun Smith being an absolute GUN in the mid 90s...

OK after looking at a few teams I've borrowed some ideas. I took Stinger's view that the forward line might be a bit top heavy and moved Lyon to CHB. Yep he was awesome there, better than Neitz in my opinion plus Neitz is about the same as Lyon in the forward line with the bonus that it's a position that he likes to smash opponents from. Bruce comes onto the ground at HFF and Danny Hughes/Robbo are added to the bench. There are a few Leoncelli fans so who would you guys like to see him replace?

Oh and Supermercado, Glenn 'the mutant' Molloy is turning in his grave right now. I'm assuming he died of mass uglyness.

He had a couple of nice seasons up forward although I thought he was more spectacular than a gun. (kinda like a few of Robbo's years) He played handy at fullback for a few games too when we had nobody else. Didn't he keep Ablett goalless once?

What about there 3 players Andrew Obst, Kevin Dyson and Paul Prymke would perfer Prymke at full back than Shanahan, would of been a handy player for us but was let down by that back injury.

Prymke was the man. He came from nowhere then got a back injury.
