COMPENSATION packages will be offered to any marquee player forced to relocate for the inaugural season of the AFL’s national women's league.

Employment will also be part of the incentive to help spread and balance the top-end talent among the eight teams.

A marquee player who needs to move interstate can expect at least an extra $10,000 on top of the $25,000 salary for the two-month season, in February-March next year.

$35k starts to become a pretty reasonable amount when you are also able to work a 9-5 job at the same time (also, if working at the club you are playing for, I imagine would have a decent, if not inflated, salary).

Of course it would depend on what the player is currently earning and their personal set up as to whether or not it is worth making the trip, but in my case I'd happily move interstate if I could play sport at the top level and earn $100k

Considering it's a competition that hasn't even started yet, and it's only for a couple of months, not a permanent move, that's not bad money. I would've thought it'd be better to get marquee players from the home states though, it'd probably help to promote participation in the sport more showing hte pathways you can go through, and having a home-town inspiration

It's pretty harsh to force someone to effectively put their life on hold for a couple of months purely because of AFL rules. If the local club doesn't want you, then sure, go for your life. But to tell someone they have to move (and not even permanently) is tough.

The pay compares reasonably to a player picked up in the rookie draft, but unlike the blokes there isn't any prospect of a higher salary down the track.

That will come in time, but probably not quickly. The remuneration for the women is adequate, but not great. There will be talented female footballers in good jobs, who will be disadvantaged if they join a team. As happens with male rookies. But as you point out, the men have the chance to significantly improve their pay packets, based on performance.

How is there no prospect of higher pay down the line?

The league is costing afl millions at the moment. If they actually succeed and create a profit the players will get a slice. 35k is stupidly good money for a couple of months work.

If women's footy has decent tv ratings, decent sponsorship and good attendance the money will
Follow.

It's going to be more than a couple of months. Players forced interstate will have to move for at least a month before the season you'd think, possibly more. And they would have an obligation to keep in decent condition and play for their local time between seasons.

I just think it's wrong to expect players to give up their careers for what is (comparatively) a measly amount of money. If they were being paid $100k+, then fair enough. But say they're a teacher or something like that, it's not something you can do for a few months interstate. They'd have to either be extremely lucky to have an employer prepared to grant them leave, or quit their jobs. It's harsh.

Well I'm quite sure when interviewed before the draft this would all be discussion points. I doubt freo would draft a Melbourne person who would simply say they can't leave their job.

Regardless other athletes have made much bigger sacrifices to earn far less money to succeed in their field.

True, but only because they have to. Not because someone's told them they can't do exactly the same thing in their home city.

The best players will be enticed with full time jobs through the club. Player payments will be then just a nice top up. Middle ranked players will have to play locally, and fit it in with work, or chase interstate opportunities at their own risk.

WA has already lost Kelly Gibson to SA, and Cowan mentioned that they are worried WA will be targeted by other states.

Saw a pic on social media of WA's Renee Forth at Spotless Stadium, Western Sydney on the weekend. Perhaps a GWS Marquee???

WA only has to lose a few like that to come back to the pack. Hope Freo is working on it.

From the women's perspective, right now is the chance to set yourself up in footy, I think a few would entertain any offers.
