They played the song called A Big Country by the band called Big County.

I really like the song and it has an infectious rif that sounds more like bagpipes or something along those lines.

Does anyone else like this song ?

Which album was it off and did this band have any other good songs ?

Don't expect much in the way of any new material, the lead singer hanged himself a couple of years back.

Twas a good song. I seem to remember it being a self titled album don't quote me on it. They did release a 2nd album a couple of years later but again the name of that album escapes me. Not sure what they have done since - the first album was released in 1984 and the 2nd around 1986.

From their official website:

The band broke massively worldwide with their debut album The Crossing (1983), which sold over 3 million copies and earned Big Country 2 Grammy nominations. Their subsequent four albums, Steeltown (1984), The Seer (1986), Peace In Our Time (1988) and No Place Like Home (1991) were all certified gold on release and took the bands total record sales tally to over ten million.

And as Sandeano has pointed out the lead singer died in 2001. However, I do believe the rest of the band are still together.

Do you reckon I could get that particular track off a file sharing program or something like that ?

Anyone got it on thier computer and willing to copy it on CD for me ?

Check out The Skids while you are at. In particular the song "Into The Valley". The Skids were Adamson's band prior to Big country. Much better IMO. But that's probably my age!

( Ashamed to admit it ) but i actually have the twelve inch version on vynil that even has a couple of re-mixes on it . It would be a bit of collectors item actually .

If you were interested i could make you a tape of it . But does anyone listen to those things anymore ?

Anyway of getting vynil onto file ?

Yeah i've recorded a truck load of records/vinyl onto cd, do it all the time.

I simply hook up my 1200 turntable's into a mixer which hooks up to the back of the computer (RCA'S to 8th of an inch plug), record onto a program called Dexter, once recorded edit out the scratches at the start an end and EQ.

Was a great 80s song, checked the website, it was released in May '83.

Found this australian link about the band.

Did they precede Simple Minds, or just precede the commercial Simple Minds?

Just preceeded the commercial (Americanised) Simple Minds. As stated previously The Crossing was released in 1983 (Was actually the first album I ever bought).

I thought they lost the plot a bit after the second album - there's only so much you can do with e-bowed guitars sounding like bagpipes.

Got pretty excited last night, saw the clip on Chartbusting 80s for the song last night.

Very interesting idea, how on earth does a dreadlocked female go around drawing blood at guys who are in an 80s band ?

I was always a Huge fan of the skids - and still get out their stuff on occasion - I luved BC as well - especially the early stuff tho they did do some great staff later on (king of emotion, ships) was sad to hear of Stuarts demise - the rest of the bad are in the Casbah Club with bruce foxton from the jam - they do BC songs and the Jams songs - would be hoot IMO. As for being like simple minds - what a crock - the only comparison is that they are both scottish - on that logic you would say there were a poo mans Rod Stewart...........

Later

Should also mention drummer Mark Brzezicki being a member of The Cult (some time before they, like Simple Minds, became Americanised).
