I finish my uni degree later this year and have decided to head overseas for about 12 months next year. Probably head to India and South East Asia (Europe's too expensive, $100 per day! Compare this to $20 per day in Asia - no competition).

Would like to hear about everyone else's big overseas trips that they have done. What were the highlights and the lowlights?

Life is short - travel hard!

Spent two months in the good ole US of A.

Highlights: seeing the Blue Oyster Cult (Legendary early 70s metal band) play live. Seeing the Zeros (legendary LA punk band) play live. Seeing WrestleMania 2000 live. Going to Six Flags Magic Mountain, Knotts Berry Farm and Disneyland (Six Flags was awesome). Going to Graceland. Seeing Kiss live in Memphis. Everything in New Orleans and heading out into the Bayou on a boat. Drinking at Handsome **** Manitoba's bar (lead singer of the best New York punk band, the Dictators) in New York. Eating clam chowder and visiting Alcatraz in San Fran. Snorkelling with tropical fish in Hawaii. Meeting a fellow Hawthorn supporter in the Grand Canyon.

Places I've been:

New Zealand x 2
China
Macau
Hong Kong
USA x 2
Canada x 2
Germany
Czech Republik
Austria
Netherlands
England
Scotland

Last big trip was my European Backpacking Extravaganza in 2000. Went on my own for four months, got drunk in Berlin, Prague, Salzburg, London, Leeds and Edinburgh. Got smashed stoned in Amsterdam and London and Leeds. Snogged pretty girls in Berlin, Salzburg, London, Leeds and Amsterdam. Loads o fun! ;)

2 years ago went to Europe with mum dad and brat:

Visited Singapore
Dubai
london
All over Ireland ( North and South)
Paris
Hannover (Germany)
Vienna
Croatia ( Zagreb, Kutina, Dubrovnik and Split)
Italy ( Rome, Milan and Naples)

All was great! Best thing Ive ever done! Reccomed it to anyone!

The longest trip i've been on lasted for over a year. I went to:
Loads of Europe (Lived in Holland for awhile, went to Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Luxemburg, Denmark, Italy, etc etc etc can't remember allot of the countries)
USA
UK
China

Also I plan to take a year off after I finish VCE to travel before going to Uni, 2004 will be the year if I end up going.

I love to travel. At the moment it's motivation to get through my degree, so I can afford to leave again. Lived in London for a year when I was little, and we 'Kombied' through Europe and the British Isles then. Went back backpacking for my Christmas break a year or two ago, this time with mates, and just loved it. Also spent a few weeks in Indonesia, both in the cities and up in the mountains, would love to go back. Also plan to travel through Africa and America, but for some reason the rest of Asia doesn't hold that much appeal.

But, to anyone wanting to travel, don't forget about our own backyard! I've been around Australia a couple of times, 4WDing through the desert, Kimberleys and Cape York Peninsular and have enjoyed the experience just as much as what I've seen overseas. It annoys me when people don't even consider their own country when planning holidays, instead wasting their money on overseas trips, overpriced drinks, run of the mill hotels and cheap but crap shopping. :)

At least it's less crowded for me though :D ;)

just a summary. highlights include:
- australia winning the frank worrell strophy at sabina park, jamaica 95
- the beaches of nevis, st kitts + nevis, west indies
- drinking and other adventures in key west, florida
- new york (esp. Broadway shows)
- taking a boat under niagara falls
- realising how small graceland is
- contrasting memphis at night to memphis by day
- drinking in New Orleans and watching Mardi Gras videos swearing i'll get back there in the right month next time
- las vegas (gotta love it)
- six flags, sacramento, just gotta do it
- hogmanay in edinburgh, such a great tradition
- all of london, had to do the jack the ripper tour by night
- amsterdam (somehow resisted to see the live sex shows)
- paris art galleries, especially de l'art brut
- switzerland (la festive geneve, lugano's parks, interlaken's lakes)
- bad pizza but great gelati in venice, italy
- the ruins of pompeii, italy
- greek and roman ampitheatres in siracusa, sicily
- polynesian spa, rotorua, new zealand
- art deco architecture in napier, new zealand

and places i haven't see but were highlights of fellow travellers:
- tobago, trinidid+tobago
- cancun, mexico
- san francisco
- vienna, austria
- prague, czech republic
- dublin, ireland

and while wearing a New York t-shirt at an art gallery in Chicago, bumping into a girl wearing an Australia t-shirt. turned out she was from New York and I obviously was from Australia. we just had to go grab a drink.

future wishes:
- those places above that other travellers recommended
- carnivale in Rio
- mexico when i'm older, in a 'bago, my only worry being where's the next cerveza
- french open, paris (whenever)
- cricket world cup 2007 in the west indies
- thailand, nepal, india
- a space station or space colony if i live long enough
- and I just have to honeymoon at Sun City, South Africa!!!

Never been overseas, but I do have a big trip planned to LA, just depends what year. Most likely 2003. :D

It involves participating in the annual Carl Wilson Walk Against Cancer, which for the last 2 years has been held in Santa Monica. The entire weekend revolves around Chez Jays, an old hangout of Dennis Wilson (see my avatar if you don't know who he is), catching In Bloom and meeting the Beach Boys' people. :) I'd also wanna go to Disneyland lol, then maybe to San Francisco, Sacramento, Big Sur lol.

Also would love to visit my net people who are in North Carolina, Maine, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Texas.

OH and I would SO love to go to Colorado and check out those damn Rocky Mountains Mr Denver told me so much about. :D LOL

And finally, it's a dream of mine to visit New York, possibly stay there. :D

You gotta go to South East Asia folks, you dont know what your missing!

For some reason, most westerners spend their lives visiting other western countries  . Why not see a totally different culture?

In SE Asia everything is cheap and anything goes - its crazy :D .

How were the ladyboys?

Well I am 21 and have never even left our shores.

However I have been to the following places:
Hobart
Launceston
Adelaide
Coobert Pedy
Alice Springs
Ayers Rock
Kakadu
Darwin
Broome
Perth
Fremantle
Cairns
Byron Bay
Fraser Island
Surfers Paradise
South Mole Island
Sydney
Newcastle
Canberra
Lilydale (otherwise known as woop woop)
..and a heap of other towns.

I would love to replace all of these with just 1 or 2 international destinations. But I can't, yet. I would love to backpack for a year though. I've heard great things about Thailand. And the UK would be great too.

If you decide to visit England, feel free to drop in and stay at my Fawlty Towers hotel. I'll even make sure Manuel, our spanish waiter from Barcelona, takes holidays at that time as he doesn't understand any english and would drive you mad!

I spent nearly 18 months backpacking through europe and the uk. was fantastic, best places were berlin, interlaaken, bruges, poland, russia, prague and chesky kromolov, and scotland. i also went to japan. Im thinking of going back end of next year, once i am more competant with the german language to work. ill be 23- 24 then and could work for a few yrs before the cut off point of 28. i was pretty young when i went 19/20 and had my 21st over there, i went alone, and had a ball.

Been to Europe, US, various Asian countries. Went back to Europe in October and spent two weeks travelling in Turkey - great people, great scenery, great food.

And standing on the beach at Anzac Cove ... magic.

Last overseas trip I took was to the Maldives, which was awesome.... paradise on earth - that was last year.
In '99 I went to Europe for two months with the fam which was incredible. You understand how much culture the Europeans have when you actually visit it. Spent most of the time in the UK (England and Ireland), and then drove from France, through Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Croatia, Slovenia and Germany.
Heading to the US at the end of this year.
