I know there are people older than me who thought Terrible Certainty and Persecution Mania were sellout records. Also Turbo and Somewhere in Time got backlash (particuarly Turbo). For the record I love all four of those albums - just an example of how subjective it can be (think Turbo the only one of the four most would take as a huge misstep).
Crazy some people would consider those 2 sellouts.

I heard a few people say South Of Heaven was a sellout also.

My entry point into metal proper was the Creeping Death/Jump in the Fire EP which came out a year or so after AJFA, the benchmark for me as a result I guess..

Was listening to Creeping Death today, still trying to nail it on the axe after all this time too

What are people's biggest letdown metal album?

For me it would be Exodus - Impact Is Imminent bought it the day it came out what a steaming pile of shit it was.

For some reason I was incredibly hyped for St Anger. A lot of speculation that Metallica would be returning to their roots and pretending the 90s never happened. Then it came out and, well...the speculation was not very accurate, to say the least (though looking back it was really driven by what people wanted to happen, rather than there being any evidence of it).

I still have my copy, but I've only listened to it once, which is when I bought it. FTR, I still think The Unnamed Feeling is actually a good song, but nothing else on that album grabs me.

Yeah was hoping at the time that would be a comeback, got the impression from the prison video it wasn't to be, never purchased it.

I was a bit dismayed by Redeemer or Souls, Priest as well from memory, the 2 after hit the mark.

Some of my favourite albums are ones i didn’t care for much initially.

St Anger is not one of them.

The songs were actually good live.

King Nothing isn't a bad song in hindsight, could picture it on side B of the Black album, but still hate both Load albums with a passion.

Yeah forgot about that. It’s my favourite Slayer album. Like 70s Priest on steroids.

Haunting the Chapel's peak Slayer imo
Love that e.p.

Show No Mercy & Hell Awaits are awesome too but the other 3 will always be my favourites.

Divine Intervention had some great stuff also.

After that they never got near that level again but were still good.

Some good songs on Undisputed Attitude, but almost all covers
Love 213 from Divine Intervention.

Bands played faster than Slayer and had more explicit lyrics but none matched their brutality imo.

Angel Of Death is still the most brutal song i have ever heard.

First 5 albums plus HTC all pretty much equal. SOH my favourite probably due to it being the first one I heard. Pretty certain it has the best drumming of any album I've heard. Mental. Went into town with a friend and he picked it up from Metal for Melbourne upon release. Those were the days. Enjoy DI but it's not at the same level.

Agree DI was a step below but the last “Great” album they made.

Thrash basically peaked from 1986-1990 was downhill from there.
