*yawns* you wish there was a player on your list, Hird excepted, that had the courage Archer has.

Doesn't mean Archer doesn't belt people - because he does. Remember his hit on Cameron Thurley at Geelong in 2005? Thurley was lying on the ground when Archer came from behind and smacked him across the face. Ball was nowhere in sight. Amazed he only got 1 week.

No doubt it was courageous though.

Can't go past Leigh Matthews on Neville Bruns in the mid 80's.

100m behind play and king hits a bloke. Cheapest act in the games history.

The most publicised dog act in the games history, but not the worst.
Bruns had already been reported that day and was not averse to the odd snipe himself.
The game had degenerated into a series of brawls in the last quarter, so it wasn't exactly out of the blue.
Plus the fact that Matthews was walking through the centre and watching the play as Bruns jogged past him within centimetres. This gives some credence to Matthews' claim that it might've been a case of him snapping as if to say "I'll get one in first before he gets me".

There have been far worse pre-meditated, calculated king hits to ball players who had no idea of what was coming. A good example of this was Stan Magro's felling of Terry Bright in the 1981 Qualifying Final. The Collingwood back pocket had no other motive than put the Cat forward out of the game as he smashed him from behind while the ball was at the other end of the field.

People go on and on about that Matthews one because it was caught on camera. If the camera had moved five metres to the left and not captured it, hardly anyone would've said a word. There would've been the usual tut-tut, you thug, etc, but none of the uproar that ensued. As someone already said, that stuff used to happen every other week.

I agree. You dont see too many players leading with the point of the elbow to the head anymore. From memory he broke wakelins jaw and recieved a 4 week suspension. Its a pity he retired after that as I was looking forward to a bit of payback. Still probably a good way for bickley to be remembered.
Stafford is a dirty prick also
as is didak.
Live by the sword, die by the sword.

I know most Port supporters didnt have the slightest bit of interest in the AFL until Port joined, but Bickley's was nothing in comparison to what Plugger did to Caven. Plugger launched off the ground spun into Caven with his elbow. The most devastating thing I have ever seen, seriously he could have killed Caven and it was totally deliberate. He had the worst anger management issues when he was at St Kilda, strangely he was a different player at Sydney.

If that happened today Plugger will have been suspended for life. I remember watching that game Plugger was psychotic on that day and noone was going to keep him from the ball whether he used legal or illegal means, he even got reprimanded because one of his goals he deliberately kicked the ball at full tilt through the goals directly at a sydney supporter that had been giving him stick all day.

Broadie Holland punching Paul Williams when willo had his back turned at TS in 2005. Dog act from a dog of a person.

Yeah that game pushed him over the edge and was the game that got him to sydney which i found ironic. He was just wild all day and was on a mission to kill someone. I honestly thought Caven was going to die the way he elbowed him..could have easy pushed the bone up his brain.

I think after that game he realised what he did and toned down, hence why he changed a year later. Peter Cavens face was a mess.

And he also almost killed kenny and his posse behind the paddo end goals

You probably don't watch enough of your own team OB1. Roger Merrett was quite in the same catagorie, making players EARN thier kicks ;)

That fat bloke that played for you wasn't a nice bloke either...how many times did Rioli get suspended?? I recall him KING HIT Adam Simpson 50 metres off the ball... that's mud in your eye for wanting to dob in Arch.. you poor sod. What's it been now? 5 years... that's why you had to find a North player..

Did you actually read my post or simply see the name Archer & get all defensive? I gave Archer a wrap & tried to make it quite clear I wasn't having a go at him simply stating that he immediately came to mind & with good reason (punching blokes & disguising it as a tackle). I didn't try to compare him to some of the mongrels of the past (of which every club has them) simply pointing out a tactic he has used on several occasions that I have seen. If you are not aware of it perhaps its you who is not watching enough of your team play.

I used to like bickley but I lost all respect for him after that incident.

Watch montgomery very closely next time the dogs play the crows and Im sure he will belt burton at some stage. He is very good at belting burton in the back of the head with his elbow in marking contests and making it look like a accident. There is some bad blood between those two. Their clashes used to be a highlight of the showdowns.

IMO one of the cheapest shots I've seen in footy was the Buckley blood smear - disgusting effort from an alledged leader of a football club.

True, but it was a new rule with little precedent and he was probably trying to make a point. Buckley being a disrespectful Norm Smith medallist was his lowest act IMO. I like the guy though.
