Which country is the biggest threat to world peace (I've included the EC as they sometimes operate as a single block on some issues)

North Korea. Psychotic dictator with absolutely no need to answer to the people, potentially nuclear weapons, who just happens to be surrounded by Russia, China, Japan and 28,000 US troops.

I know someone will come up with a mimicking post about the US and Bush... and I considered them (as well as Pakistan/India), but he's not going to want to many American soldiers to be dying in an election year.

i think christians have killed or been responsible for more people being killed than islam.

it was christians that massacred the jews, it was christians that invaded the ME during the crusades, it was christians that slaughtered central americans and north american indians, it was christians that brought the sword and the cross the africa for the most part etc.

islam will have to go a LOOOONG way to get the body count attributed to those bring the 'word of god'.

Jesus and the christian GOD would be most dissapointed in many of the actions done in his name.

Even Hitler was a good christian.

Islam is not a country. Moderate Islam poses no problems to anyone. Yeh sure those that use Islam to justify war are dangerous, but no more they the Christians, Hindus.... that also use the vial of religion to fight wars.

USA. I think we're the only continent that they haven't ****ed off.

Well, and Antarctica, but its only a matter of time.

China. The capabilities for a world conflict are much greater in my view if China decides to try and reclaim Taiwan, that if an Indian-Pakistani war breaks out or if North Korea resists the dismantling of it's nuclear weapons.

Taiwan is no longer recognised by any of the major powers worldwide. If China decided to invade, there'd be protests and perhaps even sanctions (doubtful), but there won't be a war. China's too valuable to go to war over something as minor as Taiwan.

The Korean peninsula, however, has the potential to bring the US, China and Russia into the same war.. possibly even on different sides.

The India-Pakistan conflict has Holocaustal potential - there's 200 nukes in those two countries just waiting to go off, and an Indian attack could provoke other Islamic countries that could see it as a Jihad over Kashmir. Don't think this would change the world's power balance, however. Just a whole lot of deaths, and in the end the US, China, EU and Russia would still be the big powers.

possibly, but I think the value of chinese trade is too important.

However the US has been pressuring china to float its currency, or at least STOP pegging it the US dollar, which is having a brilliant effect for chinese exports.

However, i do concur with the USA that the china currency trick is unfair, but given how the US treats everyone else in trade, its a bit like the pot calling the kettle black.

I think it would be funny if china started demanding the US pay in Euros, the chinese have too much to lose doing that though.

Your right, but I think its too late to change the question, after folks have voted, and the question which country is mostly likely to massacre innocent people, or which country is most likely to instigate ww3 is prob a bit misleading.

I think 'which country is the naughtiest might have been the most appropriate.

however i think we may get world peace should we blast each other to ashes, probably over a matter of pride or who insulted who first...

I will ask myself a question:

What is the greatest threat to Australia's national security?

Islamic terrorism, specifically Al Qaida and Jeemah Islamiya.

On the poll, for what it is worth, I voted for Vietnam.

ooh...gonna ask yourself a question are you.....

If your gonna ask yourself a question....then keep your answer to yourself. Why do you have the need to 'ask yourself a question'....then post the answer on an internet board.

No one cares!

err...I'll ask myself a question .......:D:D

I have to disagree.

Taiwan is strategically important to the US for a number of reasons. China was for many years seen in Washington as the only country that might challenge US dominance in the Asia-Pacific region.

Taiwan possesses strong military capabilities (although not as strong as China's), a very strong industrial base and excellent transport facilities. It sits at the crossroads of the overlapping strategic and economic interests of Japan, China and the US. In addition, it is rich, democratised, capitalist and, being Chinese, it demonstrates an alternative model of development to Chinese communism (even though that appears to be moving towards capitalism). For example Bill Clinton once stated that, the overriding purpose of the US was 'to expand and strengthen the world's community of market-based democracies', of which Taiwan is definitely one.

As such the United States has warned China that any use of force against Taiwan would have grave consequences and that China would be held responsible for the consequences. In 1979, the US signed the Taiwan Relations Act which means that the US has a formal obligation to help Taiwan defend itself. Don't forget also, that the US views Taiwan as a democratic market, which it has pledged to expand and strengthen.

In 2000, China issued a White Paper warning that it might resort to drastic measures in certain circumstances, 'including the use of force' if Taiwan continued to refuse the peaceful settlement of reunification through negotiation. China has also recently stated that it is prepared to fight for Taiwan at any cost. Many in the Chinese leadership see the re-unfication of Taiwan to China as vitally important for the country's security and also standing in the world and the hardliners are urging more stringent action be taken, especially if Taiwan declares formal independence.

Japan might also become involved. Already the government of Japan has made contigency plans for a possible conflict in the Taiwan strait. The US would most likely call on it's Pacific allies to assist as well. This will put Australia in a difficult position as Australia has a 'one China' policy whereby Australia 'recognises the Government of mainland China as the sole legal Government of China, and acknowledges the position of the Chinese Government that Taiwan is a province of the People's Republic of China'.

The question is what will happen if Taiwan makes a formal claim for independence.

Doubtful in my view. All three...USA, China and Russia have vested interest in seeing North Korea disarm or at least the crisis resolved. Both Russia and China have been attempting to exert their infleunce to persuade North Korea to come to the negotiating table. China in my view would probably regard its relationship with the United States as more important than propping up North Korea. However that might not be the case with Taiwan.

True, but is it really going to have a bigger impact on world peace than either North Korea or China? What other nations would be drawn into the conflict?

I should add that out of the three scenarios, I regard Taiwan, as being less likely to happen than a war between India-Pakistan or even a US strike against North Korea at the moment. However in my view, out of the three, a conflict over Taiwan is likely to be the most wide ranging, in terms of the nations involved. Hence my choice of the greatest threat to world peace.
