We had Rhett in town last week as guest speaker at the Port Bulldogs Past Player function.

For your info, here are some of his comments.

* The Crows having a 7-5 record had not really hit our straps this season.

* Some other clubs, such as Essendon were eight weeks preparation ahead of last years finalists because they had more time before this season began.

* Former Crows coach Garry Ayres " scared you shitless" with his approach. "When you saw him coming you went the other way"

* Current Adelaide coach Neil Craig had learned from Ayres's mistakes, realising that when talking to the media he was actually speaking to the supporters of the Crows.

* Controversial West Coast star Ben Cousins, who has been dogged by drug issues, had a popular image in Perth that was equivalent to Modra and McLeod rolled into one.

* Darren Jarman was the best player that he had ever seen. " I reckon he is better than Gary Ablett"

* Former Crows player Ronnie Burns was superstitious and, while avoiding stepping on a drain " took out " team-mate Simon Goodwin while leaving the players race.

* Andrew McLeod always ran around the banner while coming onto the ground and always threw up at half time.

* The Adelaide Football Club put tarpaulins over the race when they played Port Power because the Port supporters would spit on the Crows players entering the field.

Sarge was speaking to a mate of mine just before Ayres left and he put it in no uncertain termas that everyone despised Ayres.

You here things like that but that happens when a team is not winning, everyone starts to have a problem with the coach because as the results go down hill the coach has to turn the screws further. I am not too concerned about that, I would perhaps be more concerned if they were not performing and everyone still loved the coach.

one of my friends of a friend is now married to bryan beinke, and he says the same thing.

in fact, he's sure that if anyone else was coaching he wouldn't have retired so suddenly

Very interesting read. I knew McLoed runs around the banner every week but throws up at half time?

I was out on the ground the last two games up here in Queensland, taking pics of the banner and the run-through, and I would have sworn Andy ran through the banner both times! I found that to be amazing seeing as he has always avoided it before (except for the Indigenous team banner when he was Captain).

In his defense, John James wasn't the Port CEO then so he didn't really have to impress anyone. When in Rome.
