If he played for the Hawks in the 80s he mightve been a white supremacist instead:eek::D . Of the top of my head i cant think of one aboriginal player at the Hawks in the 80s.
Somebody help me, surely they had some/one?

I think Owen gets overlooked a lot because plugger came just after he finished I think , I'm not sure if they overlapped but I'm pretty sure he retired before wacko jacko came on the scene . He wouldn't have put up with jacko saying everyone else out of the 50metre arc . Pretty sure he would have told jacko to f.ck off. Quite often he played full forward as well pretty amazing since he wasn't tall and marking wasn't his strong suit . But when he was on song he could kick them from anywhere inside 50 especially on the run but unfortunately he had too many demons.

I actually think Jack Sinclair is the silkiest player in the club, with kicking skills that are far superior to Billings or Gresham. The difference between Gresham and the other two though is actually Gresham's greatest attribute. And that is that he truly believes in his ability to be a match winner, and to beat whichever opponent is playing on him at any point in time. And based on that deep seated knowledge he puts himself into position to receive the ball because who better to move the ball forward than himself? And if he's got It and is in range...he is going to back himself in...like Milney did.

At worst I think we got a Boomer Harvey for 10 years. At best we struck gold and have the next Ablett, who will be creating play in the midfield for St Kilda for the next 10 years.

Either way, I think he is going to be a top 3 talent for his draft and we should all chuckle knowingly every time we see an Essendon jumper.

I miss the joke , why are we going to be laughing at Essendon, not that I need a reason , lol

For playing hardball on the Carlisle trade to take pick 5 off us, then failing to take Gresham!

Jack Sinclair needs to be backed by the club and believe in himself. An unpolished gem he looks like.

Yep a diamond in the ( rookie) rough....hopefully following in the footsteps of Milney and Gears.

I'm 53 so I've seen a bit more than you , which doesn't mean I'm any better at making comparisons that anybody else. But in my mind the most skillfull player I ever saw was Rod Owen when he first hit the scene before he did his knee . I think he was 16 if I remember correctly . He had the sort of skills that they say Baldock had. But after he did his knee he lost that first yard of pace that initially got him away from others . He was never the same player . He still had some good games but too often was left sitting in a forward pocket or a half forward flank. Hope they don't fall into that trap with either Billings or Gresh.

In the wrong thread for this but best half forward line I have seen is
Owen Loewe winmar
The kid could seriously play
Actually I see a lot of comparisons with rocket Rod and Dustin Martin

Just looked up Owen's stats. Debuted just after his 16th birthday in 1983 and kicked 3 goals in that first game.

Had his break-out year in 1987 (the year Plugger won the Brownlow) kicking 39 goals from just 18 games, at 20yo, including bags of 7 (against Carlton, who won the flag that year) 5, 4, 4, ,3, 3, 3, 3.

The following year, at 21yo, he kicked 30 from just 9 games (in the team that won the spoon!), kicking no fewer than 2 in every game and again kicking a bag of 7, a 5 and multiple 3's.

So at 21yo, he was already going at 3 goals per game (in the worst team in the comp) and was miles ahead of the likes of Milne and Betts at the same age.

By 24yo he was at Melbourne (for one year, for 19 goals from 9 games, including two 5's) and the next and final year of his career he was at Brisbane, for 21 goals from just 9 games, including a career-high bag of 8, plus a 5.

Says something about him that he played for 3 different clubs in his last 3 years, despite averaging over 2 goals per game in each of those years and that he was then retired by 25yo. Shame.

For those fans complaining that Billings is not tough enough, maybe we could switch him with his doppelgänger from the NZ Southern Saints.

"Jick Bellings" doesn't look like he'd take too many backwards steps with that ink and all [emoji12]

A guy who does some work for me was mates with him growing up and played footy with him. He was drunk most of his footy career according to him. He reckons he was more talented than anyone else he'd played with but just had too many demons. He played under 19s with Lockett so fair company. Apparently Rod had some trauma at an early age so pretty sad. Lost his dad who was his direction too at that time.

Unfortunately did his knee very early on, maybe second year was never the same player . When he debuted Baldock said he was the best player he had ever seen. Also like to drink a lot so I've been told by someone on here. I saw the seven goals against Carlton was at princes park. If I remember correctly we were robbed by dodgy umpires who let the crowd get to them. He was an awesome player pity the knee injury and booze got to him.

Apparently coaches loved him so much they were permissive and didn't send him home when he arrived drunk at training and let him get away with anything.

Both are genuine guns in their own rights. I would pick Billings over Gresham in Long term. Gresh atm is killing and will only be getting better. I just see Billings having more crucial impact for us in the coming years. His elite kicking is very important and as well that he is left footed is extra special.

It's hard but I take Billings in the long term but Gresh showed more than Billings as right now.

Who would you take?

Similar players, similar builds. Who would you take if you has the choice out of the 2 and the other were to leave the club and why?

Inb4 whynotboth.jpg, can't have both.. sorry!

I'll reserve my answer for later in the thread.
Gesh needs more time on the park before we can start comparing him to anyone.

I don't want to sound like a hater, JBis a good player but you don't notice him that much. when you look at what the Bont has done i actually worry about him.
I hope pray that's going to change.

I saw him one day kick nine goals for the saints he hardly broke into a sweat , I don't know how tall he was but I would guess at least six inches shorter than Lockett. Out of that nine goals probably only three were from marks , I could be wrong but that's how I remember it. They just couldn't get hands on him to stop him . It's sad that he had all these demons. Unfortunately for him he got signed up by the party club as we were . I will always wonder what he could have been had he been signed by someone like the Hawks.

That was at home against North. Plugger was out.

IMO he could turn into a Dal Santo type, not the showiest star on the field, but surprising everyone with the amount of quality possessions racked up in a game.

What type of players would Acres, Steele and Dunstan would turn out to be? Also gresham as well.

JB went pick 3 to a rebuilding side. We werent a Top 4 side who traded their way to Pick 3. He (and any high pick) therefore is seen as a lynchpin of the rebuild. So far hes in his third season and playing OK but not spectacular footy. That would be fine if other layers around him had, for whatever reason, progressed faster than him. They havent

Right now we are making noises about playing finals and we have only one elite mid. We need at least 2-3 more to head into that territory, preferably by seasons end. A pick 3, by nature.will be looked at to lead that pack.

Paddy has been protected by being A a KPF and B, having Josh and Skunk playing good footy.

Im not saying JB wont be an elite A grade footballer. Im saying he hasnt got the luxury of playing in a top side and developing around a group of elite midfielders
