AC/DC top UK album charts in a sign of the times

Australian rock group AC/DC has hit the top of the British album charts for the first time in 28 years.

The band’s 16th studio album Black Ice was outselling its nearest competitor, Kaiser Chief’s Off With Their Heads, by two to one at one point last week, The Guardian newspaper reported today.

The sales were despite the ageing rockers refusing to release the album as a digital download, preferring vinyl and CD.

The newspaper drew parallels between the current financial crisis and the last time AC/DC made it to No.1 in Britain.
Back In Black, the album marking the band’s commercial breakthrough, was released in 1980 with Britain on the brink of recession.
At the time, inflation had hit 20 per cent and unemployment edged towards two million.

While their 1985 album, Fly On The Wall, sold in excess of one million copies, it was just a fraction of Back In Black’s 30 million and the five million reached by Black Ice in the last seven days.
The paper pointed out the album which “returned the band to its heyday” was The Razors Edge, released in 1990, just as Britain headed towards its last recession.

“AC/DC’s appeal in unpredictable times is straightforward,” The Guardian’s chief music writer, Alexis Petridis, wrote in his front-page article today.
“People crave something uncomplicated and dependable in a time of uncertainty, and rock music has never produced a band so uncomplicated and dependable as AC/DC.”

Can't wait for them to come out...

The song that was played to a pretty full Rod Laver Arena last night before Slipknot took to the stage was For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)... it bought a big grin to my face.

Has anyone got the album? Thoughts?

Got it Sat, been on heavy rotation since then. Classic Acca Dacca!! Lovin'the riffs! Particularly loving the first track and single 'Rock n Roll Train' :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

huge ac/dc fan and was worried about the time between releases for the group, the album is pretty good when do they tour?

The World Tour is about to kick off in North America - no tour announcements here yet but expect them here sometime next year. I'm guessing Australia will be where they end the tour and it wouldn't surprise me if they are the last ever AC/DC shows.

Gave it a spin on the weekend. It was one of those times in life when you put a 'as yet unheard' disc in the player knowing exactly what you're going to get. To some people that can be boring, but to others it's a joy. As an avowed Acca Dacca fan, it's the latter for me.

Right up there with death and taxes, AC/DC remain one of the few things in life we can truly rely on.

I've only heard Rock N Roll Train but I'm sold!

My first memory of AC/DC occurred at my 4th class Christmas Party (1976) when one kid brought in his older brother's copy of Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. It blew my mind - that was the day my soul was sold to rock n roll.

No 1 global.

The old dudes have still got it, and yeah, along with death and taxes, you can always rely on ac/dc. Giving the new album a whirl today promted me into drinkin a beer, blowin the smoke and re listening to some of the old faves. I'm listening to Live in Atlantic Studios as I type this, a blistering set from the band when they first ventured to the US of A. Great to here Bon talkin Strine and not sure if the yanks actually new WTF he was on about.

Can't wait for the tour.

EDIT; Damn you TOD, just read your post.:o

I still got my 1988 World Tour Accadacca Singlet intact with Angus' & Brian's signatures.. :thumbsu: Those were crazy times... who else would escort Ac/Dc's roadies back to the hotel with my sisters best two friends in tow and then AC/Dc would pull up at the lights and I'm driving with my North beret.. :D

I bought Black Ice yesterday and it's exactly what you expect - I'm in the TOD camp and loving it. It's a great primer for heading out the door to drink beer and catch some rock (which I'm about to do in 5 minutes).
