Hey guys, dunno how much you can read into this but i have heard (from a decent source) that Marc Murphy will be announced the next Carlton captain.

Has there been any talk of this previously?

My honest opinion is he is too young and there are a few in line ahead of him. Would this be a fair assessment?

Whitnall will be and should be next captain!!

In the latest incident he did very little wrong. He travelled to meet a first yr players family to make him feel completely welcome at the club. Was out having a few drinks with the boys.... wasnt drunk (as the barmen said)

Scotland was involved in a fight with a women and Whitnall happened to be there to help him out, no where has it ever mentioned whitnall doing anything wrong except stay out late!

He has set a pretty poor example to the younger players....He should know better, especially after spending so much time with the club, and acted accordingly. I think he has done his captaincy aspirations some real damage - whether I/we agree with it or not, through his actions, he has brought the club into disrepute.

What I have heard, prob BS... but I'll post it anyway just so it's out there with the rest of the rumours.

Whitnall was going to be announced captain this week, reasoning behind it was that after last weeks positive news they wanted to keep the positives flowing week to week by giving us some positive media every week (good tactic after our recent disasters).....

but then these boys screwed it up and worst of all Lance was amongst it.

So after this of course they could not advertise lance as captain until all this washes away for a few days, and unless they've had a change of heart lance will be announced captain next week.

pagan said everyone makes a mistake and it won't effect any chances of whitnall being captain, these kind of things ya don't know who to believe, i'd rather believe what whitnall said then the other Party its easy to put the blame on to someone else even if they didn't do it i don;t think Whitnall would do any thing stupid as that not when he's got a young family to look after or do something that would put in danger of him loosing any chances of being captain
i tip we'll hear his name and him captain of the blues in 07+
maby they do a saints and rotate each season to give every one a go rather then one for 3 or 4 years :thumbsu:

My first time on this site as a WA interstate member and hoping that our boys will be competitive this year as those of us who do live interstate know when the local teams are winning premierships and making the finals and we are hovering at the wrong end of the table it can be a long long season

On the captaincy it has to be Lance..he has the brains when it counts.... we have so many young players in the side you can't go from a 250 game player as captain to a 13 gamer and expect that young gun no matter how good he is to deliver everything a captain has to on and off the field...Murph will be captain one day...let Lance direct traffic across HF or HB and let the new look midfield with a rejuvenated Stevo concentrate on gettting the ball to Fev/Waite etc....

I'm not expecting anything other than 22 games where 22 players play to the best of their ability and beyond and who knows where we might end up.

I would have said Whitnall, but his lassez faire approach of late has surprised and disappointed me. Doubt how motivated he is for the role- if he was he would be burning up the training track (as much as Big Red can) by now. I'd be one to give Murph a shot at it myself, despite his age. If not, Stevens is the obvious choice.

The hotdog man outside twister>>>>>>>>>>>Bannister!
how underrated him and houla are.
pisses me off a tonne.

Houla especially but banno isn't half bad.

Anyway, would love murph and will be a great captain on and off the field.

Just one more year to be the type of captain who is courageous and smart on the field and to rack up the 30 possies a week which is what 1 more yr will do.

Lets just say a friend of a friend is shaggin someone down at the club :D

As i stated in the first post, I wouldn't be reading too much into it for Murphy is too young and not really in the mix.

Would be an interesting decision though and Carlton have done it before with "Sticks" so not exactly out of the question.

Nope......hasn't really been raised as an issue.........

Hopefully I hear the Name Lance Whitnall be named as captain for 2007 murphy's a bit too young yet give him 2 years say around ex kangaroo Wayne Carey he was 21 when he became captain Make Murphy Vice Captain for a year or 2 learn on the job :)

didn't they say it won't be announced until after the NAB Cup if i recall reading about it :)

This friend of a friend wouldnt be Lara Bingle would it?

IMO we don't have a clear stabdout as captain, after listening to all the debate and talk over the summer, i say we follow the sydney swans / melbourne storm model.

5 players get a shot at being captain throughout the season
4 weeks each and 2 players get bonus week

all get an opportunity to showcase their leadership talents, you never know one or more might really step up to the challenge and become a clear standout

it will actually help all the players who get a chance in some way and IMO benefit the club as we are developing a many leaders rather than developing just 1 leader.

Yeah he's fantastic. I just love the way he turns the ball over time and time again, and the way he just stands around with the ball in the middle of the field without any awareness of the opposition whatsoever. ;)

It was embarrassing watching him play in the last Collingwood game.

As for the captaincy, I know its almost an oxymoron but I think Grant Thomas was actually on to something with the rotational captancy policy they had down at St Kilda. Give it to Nick for this season, and tell the rest of the player group that the position is up for grabs next year. Tell them that the decision on who'll be the next leader of our club in the following year will be based not only on pre season performance but the leadership quality they have shown throughout the previous year. Given the relative youth of our list we need to put a process to fast track the older youngsters into becoming strong leaders of the club and this, in my view, would be the best way to do it.

IMHO, Nick Stevens might just be the preferred choice. The way he went about his game today was fantastic, and he was quite vocal out on the ground.

I just have this feeling that Nick might just be the next captain of Carlton.

I second this sentiment after yesterdays effort, had captaincy stamped all over him yesterday.....MM in the leadership group :thumbsu:
