Great article here on how the Blues and Ratts have learnt that defense is the key. It also shows that Ratts is a thinking coach and is willing to change his game plan if things aren't going his way. I am so happy we hired him as coach is evident for all to see that the players really look up to him and play for him, thats one of the main things that has been missing for so long here is the article http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/ne...for-the-defence/2008/06/18/1213770732432.html

Bravo Bravo Bravo...

I for one, hated the shootout, unaccountable football we were playing.... Thats shootout against Essendon was the last straw and i vowed to never attend a Carlton game again until we conceded less than 100 points in a game ( thankfully only had to wait one week ). We actually could not have played any better offensively that game, and yet still got done by an average Essendon team...

I think back to games such as the one against Brisbane at the dome last year when all and sundry were raving about the quality of the contest, while i was fuming that we were leaking so many goals.... We have close to the best full forward in the game, but when we play shootout style football we dilute his influence by allowing easy goals to be kicked up the other end....

I think the stats say it all this year. 12 games played. Games won when conceding less than 100 points - 6. Games won when conceding more than 100 - 0.

Pretty simple really. Defence wins premierships!!!

EXACTLY .... If you all at all teams that have won the flag they have had a watertight defense. No point kicking 20 goals if your going to let in 21

It is a good read, but I'm not sure the quality is there.

Numbers were dropped back on occasion to protect an inexperienced backline
Carlton's strength — its midfield — now protects a defence that, left to its own devices, would still have holes punched through it.
Jake makes it sound like our defensive structure is like Sydneys and we employ the ultra flood.

He gives no credit to the emergence over that period of time of Jamison, Bower, Armfield, Browne, Gibbs, Waite and the re-emergence of Setanta.

They have had many great one on one victories over that period........helped by better midifeld pressure in the midfield, not numbers dropping back.:thumbsd:

Very good point

I don't think it was numbers dropped back it was more the pressure in the midfield. Especially half way through the 3rd quarter when we started to lift in the midfield and sort of choked them. Thats the thing with a young team we drop off for periods of the game, it has happened every week. We will know that we are a good team when we play 4 quarters without dropping off and letting teams get away. But still these are very good signs for the Blues, I can't wait until all our kids get a bit more mature.

We also included a midfielder from round 5 who averages a league high 6.5 tackles per game, 21 possies mostly contested................what's his name.........;)
