I sat on level 2 directly behind the interchange. There would have been 10 to 15 occasions when a player ran to the bench and there was total confusion - no one ready to come on, asking each other where/who to play on, being turned around and sent back out, arms out stretched, head shaking... seemed like a massive disconnect from the coaches box to the field. Was embarrassing to watch.

We are not alone in that aspect, happens to every team at every game.

Really? I dont attend enough games live to be able to rebut that. It just seemed like guys didnt know who they were supposed to be marking, the zone was shabby etc. No onfield leadership i guess.

Was surprised at half time it was daysie who was yelling at the group to hustle in together and give them a rev not the captain or someone from leadership group. More surprised that it looked like half the players didnt give a sh!t.

Because of rotations, players ask who their immediate opponent was, especially while a game is in motion, through the midfield and especially defenders.

Minimises the mismatches

Just remember the GWS footprint (SOS's)... our Kerridge's, Graham's, Lamb's, Wright's, Rowe's were their Brogan's, McDonald's, The "Chad", Setanta, Palmer, Power, Reid, and Thorntons of the world. They had 3 years of absolute crap (= 66 games... 66 game rebuild sound familair) and then the rise began from Spoon, Spoon, 16th... then 11th, then prelim and prelim and this year with really bad injuries like us consistancy is hard but still a good strong chance to make the 8.

So like GWS our 66 games will entail 3 bottom 3 finishes and if we're lucky with our injuries next year a 10-12th finish is highly possible... this is the direction the club is going, and why there is no fear by the head's of the club. This blueprint is surely what SOS is using and has done a bang up effort without 2 raids of high picks in the draft...

And Bolton is our young coach who didn't have the luxury of Sheeds to feed off (Craig was his man and gone I suspect a year earlier than would've liked).

In next years free-agency period when we start to sell ourselves this blueprint will be shown to prospectful players... but we'll be like a GWS in Melbourne with 8-10 games at the G a year! Big rival games against Collingwood, Richmond, *.....
One of the better posts I’ve read. This is a great analysis of our situation. Well said.

And no non-player has ever made a great coach.

One thing I've heard fairly consistently this season is various media types acknowledging our rebuild and stating that we have talent on the list that just needs time to be developed.

Do supporters think this is correct? I can see 3 players under 25 (Cripps, Curnow and Doc) who are/will be genuine guns. Zac Fisher looks like he will be a solid player but lacks the frame to really influence contests. Apart from that I really can't see it, and 3 guns plus 1 solid contributor ain't gonna get it done.

Or have I got that wrong and just been blinded by some really poor performances?
Actually nowadays 3 or 4 guns will get it done as long as the balance of your 22 are consistently competitive.

I keep looking through the Richmond team & you see Rance, Martin, Cotchin & perhaps Riewoldt as your guns, then I see a stack of hard workers who consistently are competitive.

You look at the Bulldogs' 2016 team & you had Bont & Picken who really stood out & again, a whole heap of hard workers all pulling in the same direction.

I think you can add Weiters to Cripps, Curnow & Doc & then you can be quite confident about Fisher, SPS, Dow, Marchbank all being solid contributors & underneath these players will be your hard workers.

Some people need to stop ignoring the massive hole in our list among the 24-29 age group, which is currently being filled by the likes of Jones, Wright, Kerridge, O'Shea, Mullett, Casboult etc. At the moment we get consistent contributions from Simmo, Kreuzer, Murphy (when fit), Thomas (other than Saturday) & then it is already falling upon our youngsters to pick up the rest of the slack at a time when they should be virtual understudies to the mid age players.

Yeah we did have Cripps, Simpson, Kreuzer, Casboult, Thomas, Rowe, Wright etc. We have a decent core of senior players. That's as good as Freo's group. So it's not the kids leading the way at all, that's just another Bolton cop out. It's certainly NEVER an excuse for being outscored 12 goals to 0. But if you do want to talk about kids Freo had 7 players that had played 16 games or less compared to our 3. So if being young IS an excuse as you say, we were even poorer than you thought.
You're comparing Cripps, Simpson, Kreuzer, Casboult, Thomas, Rowe & Wright to Fyfe, Sandilands, Neale, Hill, Mundy.

Cripps belongs in there as does Simpson & Kreuzer (although he has always struggled against Sandilands), but Thomas, Casboult, Rowe & Wright? Thomas has been on the end of a stack of criticism from Carlton supporters, Casboult shopped himself around last year & found no suitors. Rowe, love his effort, but he's still getting a game because of the poor shape of our list/injuries & Wright was delisted by the Crows & we were the only team to show him some love. No comparison, as Brereton rightly pointed out at the weekend.

I base on my comment on the Judd's comments that they are not judging B.bolton on wins/losses this year and it would be a consideration in 2019 so that suggests to me he will definitely be at the club in 2019. I am not so sure he will definitely be at the club in 2020 and i think that will largely dependant on where the club is at at the end of 2019 season. I am not suggesting he will be gone in 2020 but i am suggesting it is not a certainty he will be there.

Just having read the above i am not sure i have phrased that very well:eek:

Yeah agree. Ideally you'd hope 2020 is a lock as well to give him 5 years, but at the same time 4 years should be long enough to see at least some progress.

Can turn ugly pretty quick too, would be really disappointing but the knives could even be out this season if we have a few more 100+ point 'coach killer' type losses.

Look at who their best 6 players were on the weekend and compare them to their age equivalent on our list and you see how ****ed we are.

25y - Neale vs Kerride
26y 9m - Fyfe vs Matt Shaw
22y 3m - Blakely vs Lang
32y 10m - Mundy vs Thomas
28y 1m - S. Hill vs Casboult
22y 4m - Langdon vs Garlett

2 of our 6 can't even get in our side and the other 4 would be lucky to get into any top 8 side
