In a recent thread on ? I think it was Harvey vs Pagan somone asked for some deeper detail on our performance from last year to this year.

Others may add more but this is a prelim:

2006 (84 completed quarters)
PF - 1747
PA - 2279
% - 76.7
Q's won - 32
Q' lost - 48
Q's drawn - 4

3 wins, 1 draw

2005 (88 completed quarters)
PF - 2016
PA - 2670
% - 75.5
Q's won - 28
Q's lost - 58
Q's drawn - 2

Makes a case for improvement to me with more Q's won, less lost, but a thrashing against swans could even this up a bit so we might wait a week to really compare. While I didn't record the exact number I can also report that we have had fewer games this year where we have not won any Q of a match (aprox 3-4 lastyear, only 1 this year) - this may well be corrected but is an approx.
At worst we haven't gone backwards.

Surprisingly our defence seems to have improved with much fewer PA.
No surprises that the PF are down with Fish and Waite missing too many games.

Go Blues!!!!

4 quarters more....maxiumum 8 with next week,.. still disgracefulll... we should be winning a lot more quarters if not games... just shows the lack of imporvment within the list/team

There is improvement amongst the players that count ... the young guys. Who thinks Walker is not 10 times the player he was last year? Who thinks Simpson has not leapt into another stratosphere this year? Who thinks Setanta hasn't improved? Blackwell? Russell? Whitnall? Fevola? Scotland? Thornton? Houlihan? Wiggins?

The difference between last year and this year might be small but players like French, Stevens, Kouta and Waite (injury) have not had the same impact as last year. Is French part of future success? Is Kouta?

You can't just look at stats, you look at areas of improvement and areas of regression. The former far outweighs the latter.

The point of this thread was to back up "claims" and "allegations" of our previous performance with some figures. Granted we are not tearing it up, but I think the figures speak for themselves. Plus, the old green guy is right, look at the younger guys who are doin the bizz. If Kouta, Nick, Barnaby, and Matty had produced their 2005 form we would have the wins on the board as well.
Apart from having 1 less win, what is your basis for saying that we haven't improved.
Remeber, saying "because I said so" is only an arguement if your 10 years old.

Of the games we lost this year we were within about 20 points in 8 of them and lost by more than 50 in 4. While last year when we lost we were only within 20 points of the opposition 6 times and lost by more than 50 6 times. This really shows how much more competative we've gotten.

well if we spend the next 10 yrs having our players improving that aint gonna help. As a team we need to improve and the facts state that quite clearly. Fev firing means theres others not contributing and we need to be functioning as a team to win games and hopefully a flag. I don't see teams like Adelaide or Westcoast winning the coleman.

The fact you are using to point out how we haven't improved is that our full forward has gone from being a petulent child to a match winner?????

Provide a real FACT please.

not sayin i dont like what fevs done... i think its one of the best thing to happen to our club since 2000... but the fact is we're not winning games and if individuals improve while the team doesnt improve i think it's worthless. Having an extra name in the all australian side just doesn't do it for me

nice work for getting those stats and posting them.

We have had 65 less goals kicked against us this year (is that correct)? and that has been the big improvement this year. We have almost always made a contest of it for most of every game. Next year we should see more occasions where we make a contest for full games and with that will come more wins.

I'm a little surprised about our points for, but i guess we might have scored a lot of goals (last year) when the game was out of reach. We certainly have had trouble kicking a big score this year and when we got to 15 goals yesterday I knew our limit wasn't far from that.

GO BLUES!

guess i missed that... top work backline...

When judging a coach or a season, I think it is more important to try and compare the actual performance against what you think the side is capable of. Just looking at ladder positions, is a very lazy way of judging performance.

Saying that we have now "won" 2 spoons in a row, therefore Pagan has to go, or this season was terrible is the easy way out. The fact is at the start of the year we had the worst list in the league, although one that is starting to show promise we some good youth coming through. I thought we would finish in the bottom 4, and we have.

What I look for is improvement and development in the list and the progression of the youth. As people have said, a lot of players have improved this year and I believe we have improved.

I do predict though, we will be bottom 4 again next year, as it will be a while before the Murphs, JK, Bower and this year picks really give us what we all want. Realistically it will be along while before we are playing a serious role in the finals.

At the start of 2006 I remember wishing for :

  • Less beltings
  • More competitiveness

So in essence I suppose it's all not been a waste. However when the team is in situations like the weekend, you lose focus of the big picture and therefore get extremely disappointed that we ended up losing by 7 goals.

Big picture is that I've got two ticks against my list of "wants" above, so all in all I can't be too devastated.

Funny you should say that. I had to EXACT same wishes going into the season. I agree that more or less the season hasnt been as good as we'd all hoped (win-wise).

But those two categories have been fulfilled to my satisfaction, except for the odd couple of beltings at the hands of the crows and stkilda.

We have also been within reach of the 4 points much more frequently than last season. Next year, when waite and fish are playing more regularly, and the young guns murph, walker and simpson come together, i think that will give us the ingredient to win more games.

Stats can tell you many things. Our players have certainly improved alot individally but we have gone backwards statistically as a team, the latter being the coach's domain. Last year's embarrasment was 4 wins, this year 3, 2 years ago, 10. That's the only stat that concerns me. With improved players we should've won quite a few more games. That's obvious. Our % hasn't changed, depite changes in the for/against figures. We've flooded alot more this year hence the 10 goals defeats are less, but given the % is the same as last year, means the ratio of our for/against is similar given scores all round have been lower. We've looked good at times kicking goals in junk-time but that simply masks the problems.

Junk time being the first 3 Q's against west coast, Pies and doggies??, the first half against pies the other time??, the first half against the crows, beat Dees twice??, whole game against Swans......I won't go on.

All competitive losses against the top 8.
The only 2 teams not mentioned here are Saints - on of ur few 4 quarter losses for the year, and Freo who we conceded starts to and nearly cleaned up with a strong finish (in junk time).

I also dispute the fact that we have flooded a lot more this year. It does a great dis-service to Lance, Brett, Tex, and Matty.
I really don't recall too many systematic floods from us this year at all - even when the saints destroyed us (hard to flood when it comes straight from the centre to Big Nick for a goal.....)

we kick a goal in "junk time" to close the gap and it is meaningless, because we still lost the game and its just masking the problem.

opposition kicks a goal in "junk time" to extend their lead and this is treated differently.

look at the whole picture not just what suits the argument best.
