Here's a guy who won a flag, was then cut the next year by Essendon (D'oh!), picked up by Richmond (D'oh!), played only a handful of games due to several injuries (D'oh!), was given the boot (D'oh!), trained with Essendon in the hope that he would be re-drafted... and then overlooked (D'oh!), trained with Melbourne and had them all beaten at the last turn, only to be pipped by a rank outsider on the line (D'oh!).
Tough Luck ? Or just a born loser ?

Not to mention Pike.
 Pike a loser ? 4 flags and 5 GF's in 6 years ? If he was a loser then I don't think he'd be able to boast that record. Not only that, but he is still on their list ! Surely he must have some talent ? Has been a very handy utility for the Lions and I was sorry to see him leave the Roos.

Really wanted the bombers to pick Blummers back up again and was surprised that he didnt get much of a look in with the Dees. His injuries were mismanaged pretty poorly by Richmond from all accounts but seems to be back to almost full fitness. You dont fluke the sort of form he showed for us, definately a class footballer.

Why do you say that richmond mismanaged his injuries?

Blumfield was finding form in 2003 when he ripped his thigh muscle off the bone which put him out for that season.
Then this injury prone player got another bad injury in the pre season of 2004.

Everyone told me that he was injury prone when we first drafted him, and they were right.

The Martin Pike who was tearing Collingwood a new A-hole until injury forced him off in the 2002 GF?

The Martin Pike that has won 4 times as many flags as Collingwood has in the past 47 years?

Martin Pike > Collingwood FC Post 1958

He was bought back very quickly from his injuries and did the same injury again. If you think a player is injury prone wouldnt you think it would be a good idea to take a little extra time.

Actually of you're counting his individual medals,a the Pies have 20 individual medals since 1958, not to mention all the ring-ins like Kekovich, Brereton, Caracella etc.

I mean you're not saying Pike won those 4 flags all by himself are you? Pretty hard to do especially as he was off the ground for 3 whole quarters in 2002. There's some fellas like Carey and Aker you might want to give some credit to...

Anyhoo, I think LM was referring to Pike as a Loser in the more general sense.

Mismanaged? You have proof of this mismanagement? He was a dud who managed to play in a very very good side. He tore his muscle off the bone by the way which is an extremely bad injury and take a long long time to heal as evidenced by is absence.

Blumfield was squeezed out at Essendon due to the salary cap in 2002, so the initial post was incorrect. He wasn't that injury prone at Essendon either, although a groin problem also struck in '02.

So he went to Richmond and things didn't work out.

Back to Essendon for the early pre-season work last year. We couldn't fit him in and we had others now in the role he played. No-one took him in the draft, which surprised me.

Whilst not being taken by Melbourne here disappointed me, now that Blumfield is fully fit again, the role that Knights has for him at Bendigo will be much more important, in that he can help with the development of the kids coming through the ranks..and that experience will be invaluable.

Pike was tearing us a new A-hole so badly we were in front and his opponent was close to our best player.

Don't forget Josh Mahoney...
Josh Mahoney > Half the Collingwood list.

In fact Josh Mahoney > Nathan Buckley

Joking, relax.

Wouldn't be the first time.
Zantuck's back injury was mistreated for three years at Richmond...that is fact.

I hear there are now fears the same is happening with Coughlan.

You people are totally screwed in the head. Seriously.

Peoples memories seem to be very short when it comes to football. I remember watching Blumfield in the 2000 grand final and marvelling at the way he would move weave in and out and snap ripper goals. Is a real shame he isnt on an AFL list this season, but who knows, if he has a really solid season with Bendigo then Sheeds may take a punt on him next year, stranger things have happened
